Cancun during Hurricane season
Hi all, my DH and I want to go on our 1st anniversary trip. For our HM we went to Excellence Riviera right after our wedding (aug 4).
Well we want to return to Cancun, this time to a different resort. We can save quite a bit of money ($300) going with Jet Blue. Only downside is, my TA can't book JetBlue because it's a Low cost carrier.
The issue of going with JetBlue is, we have a bigger risk here. Incase there is a hurricane, JetBlue does not have a reciprocal relationship with other airlines. So if our flight is canceled, we have to wait for the next JB flight. We can't just hope on another carrier, there's really no choice involved if this happens. And since JetBlue is low cost, there are less options and flights. We could lose a day of the trip or whatever.
Would you spend more money for peace of mind to go with a more expensive carrier? Or do you think this is not a big risk at all?
The trip will be Aug 3-9. Looking at the weather over the country lately, I am a bit worried. I know my DH would rather save the money and take the risk. What would you do?
TIA

Re: Cancun during Hurricane season
Im confused. Are you only concerned about Jet Blue cancelling because of the weather? If that is the case and the reason they are cancelling then all of the other carriers will cancel too.
I think you are giving too much credit to the flexibility of non-low-cost carriers when it comes to weather-related delays/cancellations. It is true that traditional carriers have code shares and partners and SOME flexibility when it comes for finding you another flight, but those situations (accomodating stranded passengers) are becoming more and more rare. And if it is at all weather related, there will be HUNDREDS of people in the same boat as you and your chances of not losing a day on your trip are probably the same than if you fly Jet Blue.
Quick answer: It's worth saving the money, go with JetBlue.

Thanks Melissa! I guess my TA's point was that if Jet Blue cancels, they have less options available- you're stuck waiting on their next flight, whereas with another carrier you have more options.
I see your point- thank you!!

Any chance your TA gets lower commission from JetBlue than he/she does with other carriers?

Who knows...but he said his agency doesn't book with JetBlue because it's a low cost carrier. So essentially, he said if I wanted a cheaper rate I should go with JetBlue, he'd have to forgo my business and he'd completely understand if I booked on Expedia.

Re: Cancun during Hurricane season
TAs do not get any commission from any airlines anymore. My mom is a TA and even she books all her airline travel online or with points.

book jet blue. you could have a nightmare on any airline when the weather comes into play.
eta: i hope my language didn't scare you. i didn't mean it like that.
I'm surprised your TA can't book it for you. None of the airlines pay comission anymore so there shouldn't be a problem.
