Need some help from "the Runners"

What is the best way to start, and ease my way in.. If I get into the Academy I need to be prepared..

Im interested as well...

I do not run at all - but would really like too....

I walk every night (although I haven't recently)
1-2miles (so about a half an hour/45min)

Is the morning or night better?
How do you ease yourself in w/o falling on your faceChat Icon

As a "new' runner, this is how it happened for me.

I did a bootcamp about 2 yeaars ago. It got me started with small runs outside- which I hated and suked at.

Then in October, I decided to hit the gym. But it was a gorgeous day and I live near the park, so I decided to try running in the park. I found a short trail (about 1.5 miles) and did that. It sucked. I was winded, and I kept counting the blocks to see when I would be done. It was like this for the first 3 or 4 runs.

Then, I made it to my half way mark without even realizing where I was. That happened a few times. And once I was on the way back, I started to enjoy it and wouldn't even pay attention to where I was until Ihit my "final stretch".

To really start from scratch, I would do intervals. Walk 2 minutes, jog 2 minutes and keep alternating for 25-30 minutes. Do that until you are comfortable....maybe a few weeks. Then decrease the walk and increase the jog time. Maybe walk 1 minute and jog 3 minutes. It'll give you time to adjust to the difference in your breathing.

I totally agree with the interval training.

Some more ideas:
-Pick a song that you love on your ipod (but isn't TOO long) and run the length of the song. Walk then repeat with another song etc.
-If you're in enough shape, go to your local track and try to jog one lap, walk the next, jog again etc.
-Most importantly pace yourself!!! Don't try to go too hard too fast (you'll just end up getting winded and giving up). Try slow and steady at first. Once you ease into it, work on your pace by doing X distance in X time.
-Try finding a jogging partner who maybe has more experience and is willing to work with you. They can help push you along and distract you Chat Icon

I can't tell you much from my personal experience as I started pretty young (12) and when you are a kid, you just do it.

But from what I have read in magazines, etc - walk/jog is the best way to start.

This is the best way to do it, there is no danger of hurting yourself.

The "Couch to 5K" program on coolrunning.com seems pretty successful. And get yourself a good pair of running shoes. The Runner's Edge in Farmingdale (I think) are great at helping you pick out a pair that fits your needs (stability, over-pronating, etc).

Thanks ladies~ I work out about 3x a week but it is on the Pre-cor and I do some weights at home, not nearly enough and not as much as before I had my dd.. So today I ran on the treadmill for about 20 minutes with out stopping, I started out walking, ran 20 and did the cool down, then hopped on the pre-cor. I can't wait to go back today..
