Unemployment Question
If you are an untenured teacher and your contract is not renewed I know you are entitled to unemployment.
However, if you later sign a contract to work for another district in September are you still eligible?

Re: Unemployment Question
awesome!
We just started claim for DH because they laid off all non-tenured teachers due to budget not passing.
He did secure another job with another district since that time.
We knew he was entitled to unemployement. However, we got a questionaire two days that specifically asked if he would be working with another district in September so I didn't know if that precluded him.
Thanks!

Re: Unemployment Question
Was he hired as a full year teacher for this previous school year. If so, doesnt he get paid throughout the summer? If so, I dont think he can collect unemployment.

Re: Unemployment Question
wait a minute....does this mean that even if you got big checks at the end of the school year for summer pay...you can start collecting now? I thought you'd have to wait until September if you don't get anything for the following year????

Re: Unemployment Question
Yes, he was hired as a full year teacher and was paid over 10 months (twice per month). So he got his last check on june 30th. We'll see. We sent it back to them indicating he has a new contract and sent a copy of the letter from the old district.

my district pays over ten months. you CAN NOT receive unemployment if you receive checks over ten months. the only diffference is that your checks are bigger throughout the year whereas people who get paid through the summer have checks that are a bit smaller. he still earned hsi yearly salary, which is why he won't receive unemployment. people that get paid over 10 months have to budget that for the summer.

i don't think you can. tyhose checks are your pay for the summer. you were paid for the whole year. i agree with you, i would tihnk you would have to wait until september to claim. how could you otherwise, you have your pay for the summer physically in your hands!

Re: Unemployment Question
actually, even if you collect over 10, if you DON"T have a job in September you CAN collect from July on....unfortunately we know that 100% to be true because of a few years ago that happened. Of course if you are continuing with the SAME job you need to budget.
The reason for the question is that this is a similar situation except that he has a NEW job for september. And the last time this happened he got the new job mid-July when he was already collecting and they allowed him to collect the whole summer until the new contract started on 9/1.
