How to find a therapist?
I think I need to do some work on myself...how do I find a therapist (psychologist) whatever you want to call it?
I am in NJ, so I am not looking for recommendations, just looking for how you go about finding someone other than the yellow pages?

you can check through your ins. company see who accepts your insurance.
If you feel comfortable send me an FM I can recommend the type of therapist who would be best for what you need to go see one for and I'll try to look up who is in your area.

why not call your doctor and ask?
you can go through your insurance directly and possibly pick out a therapist but most don't take insurance.

If you have medical insurance, search the online provider directory for a listing of psychologists in your area who take your insurance. Most psychologists accept at least some insurance plans. Also, there may be state or county psychological associations you can access online and look up providers.
Here is a link to the New Jersey Psychological Association psychologist referral service.
If any one else is interested, here is the Suffolk County Psychological Association psychologist search.

When I decided I wanted to speak with someone, I called my insurance co. and got a list of providers in the area - I knew I wanted to work with a woman - so I called 2 or 3 who were not too far away and 2 called back within a day. I spoke with one and we gelled on the phone and I knew I would feel comfortable working with her.

do you have insurance?
they have a providor directory
then id google every psychologist that you find - hopefully youll fiund one you like
