Start date change ?
Ok, I might have a job possibility and I believe we talked about a start date as 8/4/08. This was discussed a couple of weeks ago and not much thought was put into it because I was asked on the spot unfortunately and I didn't really know what to say at the time. Well, I might get a call today with an answer about this position. I've already been on 2 interviews, etc. I REALLY need to ask to change the start date if at all possible. How can I go about asking this? I'm not sure how to word it? Main reason being child care issues. Since this was discussed with the woman I interviewed with, I have had a fallen out with my mom, and now I have no child care. (Whole other story!) But I don't want it to look like I'm already having child care issues. Any suggestions? I have been looking for a job for almost 6 months, and now this happens. Talk about timing. She was suppose to watch the boys 2 days a week. Thanks so much!

in your situation- I would do what ever is possible NOT to change the start date
I only did that once in my life- it was b/c my Mother passed away the friday before I started
you still have time to find someone- or a daycare center

If they are offering you the position, I would tell them I need a day to think about it and then call back the next morning to accept but let them know the date you are able to start. It's part of the negotiations, like anything else. I've done this on the last two jobs I've taken without problem. At minimum, if you were at another job, you would need to give them 2-3 weeks notice, anyway, so I think they would expect that.

i agree with beth. you don't want to start off with them thinking you may be a high maintenence employee.

i forgot to ask, didn't you just start a new job or am i confusing you with someone else? I could swear you had the same start date as me - we were wishing each other luck - 5/7. what happened? you're unhappy there? if i'm confusing you with someone else, my apologies.
