I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
I did my demo (thanks to everyone who had great suggestions and advice) on thursday. He offered me the position and I accepted though I haven't signed anything and have yet to hear back from him or his secretary.
I really WANT K and might get it, though it seems that if he doesn't get the enrollment numbers, i'll be in 1st...which will be good but I really, really, really love Kindergarten!
Anyway, is there any important info you now know that you wish you knew when you were first hired for NYC?
Good tips for insurance policies or the mandatory new teacher seminars?

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
Welcome!!!! I don't know about seminars and honestly, they were a waste of time. Ask us!
GHI is great insurance.
Put money into your TDA. The TRS is automatic. TDA is optional. DO IT!!!!!
Get a STaples teacher rewards card and see if you can get a tax exempt certificate, too, from a secretary and use it!
Get a Barnes and Nobles Teacher card. Gets you 20% off.
I don't know if you are new teaching or just new to NYC, but if you have ANY questions, ask.

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
congrats and lots of luck! there are a lot of NYC teachers here (myself included). i agree with going wiht GHI and the TDA. also, go to all your union meetings and stay informed!!!!
ps dont plan on "signing" a contract. when i got hired, i was just verbally offered the job and then told to show up the first day of PD.
ETA; i never went to the new teacher seminars.... i thought they were a waste of time! (i hope i dont get caught now!!)

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
agree to all of the above...
i don't teach in NYC anymore, but I did and my husband does... so please feel free to FM. I taught inclusion kindergarten in NYC. hated the grade level, but loved my school!
also, if you have a Masters degree or any other credits post=bachelor's or post-Masters, get your transcripts in NOW and fill out a salary differential form. otherwise, they will just pay the bachelor's degree rate and then you get paid retroactively the difference (more taxes taken out). Call Court St. (BOE headquarters) and they should send the form to you.
Also, make sure you have a TB test done... they want proof of that and i am assuming you're certified so you have your fingerprints.
and advice in general: if you EVER send things down to court street (salary differnential forms, TB test, whatever) make COPIES for your own records! they are notorious for losing things or saying they never received it. my DH also sends it return receipt requested.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
thank you to everyone for their well wishes and advice. I'll stick with GHI per your advice, but what is a TDA is it like a tax shelter annuity/403b? If so, that's what I did in FL and I loved it.
So the meetings aren't mandatory? That's good to know. When were you allowed in your room to start setting up? I have a ton of boxes in my basement and I need to get them out soon b/c it is so humid down there.
Also, I live by 65 court st, so can I take the paperwork down there? Do I need a letter from the school secretary so that they can put me in the system? Do they need official or unofficial transcripts? Can I get extra credit for the classes I took above the graduating limit in undergrad, i.e. 120 to graduate but I had 136 or something like that? I have my Masters so I'll bring those records with me too.
THANK YOU THANK YOU for all of the help thus far and I know I'll bombard you with questions as the summer progresses!
Good luck to those still searching - the right fit will come along!

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
Congrats!!!! Once the secretary gets back to you, she will tell you what to do from there. I didn't have to go to Court St. Once the principal hired me, the secretary did most of the work. I gave a copy of my license.
Another piece of advice, become friendly with your payroll sec...she will be the one you go to with any payroll, insurance, medical concerns. I hope you get a good one!
You should call the school to ask wheh you can go in, that varies depending on the prinicpal.

I love teaching in NYC! You will not sign a contract or anything. But also, if the secretary doesn't call you- call her!

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
a TDA is a tax deferred annuity, kinda like a 401 k... you can choose to have a certain percent of your salary taken out (before taxes) and you choose what you want to do with that money- for example, i have 13% of my salary taken out before taxes. it comes out to about 440 each month. you can choose to put that money into the stock market, or put it into a fixed savings (locked in at 8.25%). everyone will advise that you put most of it in the stock market if youre young (be aggressive while you can be), and to change it as you get closer to retirement.
i have 80% of my money going to the stock market, and 20 in the fixed.
trust me, do it asap- i didnt do it my first year at the board of ed, and i could kick myself for it. its a forced savings, and honestly, since im not a good saver, its been a blessing for me knowing that im doing SOMETHING right with my money...
TRS is the Teachers Retirement Service, (someone correct me if im wrong) and i THINK its the money for your pension that is automatically taken out from the day you start working- its 3%
another thing you might consider is buying the Additional Rider for GHI- it costs a couple of bucks a month, but it would help cover you in case of a major hospitalization/illness

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
you also asked about the extra credits you took in grad school- any extra credits can be applied towards a salary differential, college or grad school or beyond grad school
in the board of ed, once you get to 30 credits above your masters degree, you get a raise... if you only have, say 16, thats fine; send all the info to them from now so that they have it on file. if you keep taking classes, keep sending in the info to them, even though they tell you to wait until you have your 30.
you might also want to look into P-credits or P-courses... they are like college classes but they are offered to BOE employees at a discounted rates. unfortunately, if you take all the classes and then move to nassau county, the classes dont count in nassau...

Re: I'm going to be a NYC teacher!
Congrats!! please contribute to TDA. It is very important and it will benefit you in the long run. I love working in NYC and we have the strongest union and great benefits. GOOD LUCK!! Don't let anyone discourage you about working in NYC, I feel that my job as a guidance counselor/teacher is appreciated more in the city. Worked out of NYC as well!!!
