1- when are we required to begin working?

We must go in the Thursday before Labor Day. I am sorry but I do not have a calendar to give you that date.

2 - should i have a nyc certificate/license? i tried to find a number for 65 court st but to no avail

It will take a LONG time to get your certificate because the DOE is SLOW. If you have yoru provisional you should be fine for now.

3 - how do i get a file number?

My file number was given to me the first week of school when I first started. I believe they generate if for you. It is also on your paycheck if I am not mistaken.

4 - what should i know about getting hired and what do i need to do?

Know that a lot is expected of us. There is a TON of paperwork in NYC. I know that there is paperwork everywhere, but they make you document everything. You may not have all the supplies you need and you get $150 toward buying these supplies, but you don't get that back until December-ish. And, remember, one day at a time. NYC BOE is difficult to navigate at first, but you'll get it.

First off...before you go to court street call your payroll secretary at the school. She/He will be the biggest help.

1- when are we required to begin working?

We start work Thursday the 28th. I will be going in on the Monday to try and set up my room but again ask the payroll secretary and she will tell you then.

2 - should i have a nyc certificate/license? i tried to find a number for 65 court

I never had to go to court street. You can actually go to the doe office in each borough or the district office. Call the secretary.

3 - how do i get a file number?
Your file number is not that important anymore but once you get some documents, it will be on there. Ask the...payroll secretary.

4 - what should i know about getting hired and what do i need to do?

Everything goes very slow in the DOE your best bet is to ask the payroll secretary and keep on top of your paychecks.

IF YOU HAVE years experience in another state/school you need to apply for a salary step which will be more money.

Hope I helped

to add-- check out the DOE website for school calendar and other info. (nycenet.edu) and the uft website. (uft.org) Be sure you fill out health insurance info, register with the UFT (prescriptions, dental, and vision are covered) enroll in TDA. Def. fill out salary dif. You are probably eligible for Jarema Credit.

Re: ? from a new NYC teacher

Please correct me if I 'm wrong, as I did this several years ago...

Did you get fingerprinted? I thought you get a file number when you get fingerprinted, and only then will you be hired. If thi is the case, how were you hired without the file number?

No you need your fingerprints to get licensed in NY state, so now the city just makes you fill out a form to get the prints from the state.
