Has anyone changed their carerr?
I went to school for Marketing and have very minimal marketing experience. So my question is now I'm an administrator at a very well known school but want to possibly go into marketing. Do I have to start at the entry level positions? I cant really afford to take a pay cut and I definitely want to make more money.

Re: Has anyone changed their carerr?
I have a business degree and had tried to get into marketing.....VERY HARD to get a decent paying job off the bat..... I would have had to take a large paycut and commute to the city and start entry level......not worth it for me......
Good luck!

usually you have to start at the bottom you know, because others who majored in the "industry"would have top pick over over someone who doesn't....
Good luck!!!!!

I would move to a marketing role at your current employer and then after you have some experience there move onto something higher paying since you'll have real experience and the degree.

Unfortunately I think when changing careers when you don't have experience in it you might have to start at entry level.
Could you pick up some marketing experience at your current job or perhaps intern at a marketing place one day a week for experience?

I agree, this is what I did and it worked out well.
I have a BFA in studio art, not much of a job market there. So after college I took a job as a secretary in a civil engineering company. After a few months I saw they were subbing out simulation work (basically using photoshop to create post-construction views of a project to help get approvals) I went into the VP and told him I could do it for much less.
The only thing is there wasn't enough graphics work for it to be a FT position so I learned AutoCAD so I could also do drafting.
That was 8 years ago, now I'm the manager of the CAD/graphics dept - it worked out well for getting a totally unmarketable degree.

Re: Has anyone changed their carerr?
you never know though.
I am a TV producer and with my experience and knowledge I was able to secure a great position as a Media Producer (but really Project Manager) at an Interactive design and Marketing agency--I have no real marketing experience. The pay and benefits are pretty good too. I did take a paycut, but TV producers get paid really well when you freelance as you get paid by project.

Re: Has anyone changed their carerr?
I was a TV producer until a year ago, when I started doing public relations. I had NO experience doing PR but since the TV and PR fields are so similiar it wasn't necessary. I work for a very large institution and am making a little more than I was when I left TV. Anything is possible. My best advice would be if you're serious to make the change do it sooner than later.
