nyc teacher attire
what types of shoes do you wear to work? we had a very relaxed enviornment where the majority of the teachers/coaches and principals wore open-toed sandals, nice flip flops and the like...I'm assuming I'll have to buy new shoes to wear with my outfits - what are your favorite go to shoes?
and....express work capris - yes or no?

Sounds like my school..I try to wear whatever is comfy especially since I am on the 3rd floor. Usually get mine in aerosoles or nine west.
Oh and yes to the capris

Re: nyc teacher attire
My school is very laid back. In the beginning of the year I wear capris with a nice top and sandals. Sometimes I wear flip flops. A lot of teachers wear jeans in the winter. Love Nine West boots....they are so comfy.
A lot depends on your administration and what they allow.

Re: nyc teacher attire
every school is different. some teachers in my school dress soooooo casually. actually some are just downright sloppy, sweats and sneakers, not appropriate imo. but most are more professional. i lived in capris all spring. everyone wears open toed sandals but not too many wear flip flops unless it's a professional day. i guess cuz the kids are not allowed to for safety on the stairs. oh and lots of jeans in the winter although i try to only wear them on fridays. our principal always wears jeans on fridays. but she is pretty casual. i've subbed in schools wear the principal wore a suit every day. i guess that's why people get away with sloppy sweats in my school

Re: nyc teacher attire
Some of my co-workers dress in things I would not give to the Salvation Army. I think it's all about balance- you want to look neat, like you care about your appearance, but formality isn't necessary either. Capris are fine, when it comes to shoes I prefer flats because I stand so much, but I wouldn't wear sneakers.

Re: nyc teacher attire
We are not allowed to wear flip flops drives me crazy when the classrooms are 95 degrees, so a lot of us keep them in our rooms and slip them on and off. We also aren't allowed spaghetti straps or thin shoulder straps. Otherwise, I've seen teachers in Juicy sweats and suits...depends on the teacher and the day.

Re: nyc teacher attire
My principal suggests business attire. I have seen teachers in sweats, but that is not professional in my opinion. I also know that the principal cannot tell you how to dress according o the UFT,...we do it out of respect.

Re: nyc teacher attire
thank you ladies...i appreciate your suggestions and advice. i think i will get a nice pair of flats to go with my capris - my first day outfit is close to being picked out...i just have to wait till the 25th to get into my room and see what the other teachers at the school have to say.
