But, being the history teacher, I would insist on taking a day trip to Peal Harbor (on Oahu). So, depending on the age of your children, you might consider a day trip to get some history in! Have fun planning!
I was a history major in college. DD will only be 7 months when we go. We leave in like 3 weeks. But I am begging my DH to do a day trip to Oahu just so we can go to Pearl Harbor. We want to see the Arizona before it sinks Is it true that you have to get there really early or else the line is ridiculous?

I went to both. Maui is definitely more family oriented. Oahu is more manhattan like. In Maui we stayed iat the mariot in Wailea and it was just beautiful!
I stayed at the Marriott in Wailea as well. I loved that hotel. Great location and they had family events too.

Do you prefer Oahu or Maui?
DH, DD and I are going in September. Which island would be better for a family? I know there is more to do in Oahu but Maui is more relaxing. TIA for any help or advice.
I used to live on Oahu and on Kauai!

Lahina is a cute little town you can walk around...kinda like Port Jeff.
Yes, you have to get to the Pearl Harbor Memorial early because the lines are crazy and they close early too.
I loved Maui!!! Can't wait to go back there some day.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
Hmm there is definitely more to do in Oahu but I really liked Maui better - more relaxing and there were things to do - just not as much I guess family things.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
We went to 3 islands on our HM. Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
You can do both, but if I had to pick just one, it would definitely be Maui all the way!!!

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
I agree with all PP's who loved Maui. Lahaina was a lot of fun (we stayed at the Westin Villas on Kanapaali beach). We liked Kauai too (stayed at the Princeville on the North shore- little rainy but beautiful).
I heard Oahu is great to see the Pearl Harbor exhibit- but otherwise- just like Miami beach or any other beach area.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
Definitely Maui. We have been to both and although we liked Oahu - if I could do it over I'd probably skip it. It was cool but it is kind of like NYC (but all in Japanese lol) on a beach. We liked how - in Maui - there are cities and towns where there's lots to do and then there's also peaceful, serene beaches and natural surroundings. You could look into doing both. It is nice to experience more than one island in Hawaii and the prices are VERY reasonable for going island to island.
We went to Kauai, Oahu and Maui.
If I could do it over and next time we go - we'll do just Kauai and Maui - six days on each! Kauai was FANTASTIC and Maui was amazing too.
There are so many great resorts -- and September, you'll be happy to know is the best time to go. All the kids are back in school so the resorts are not as crowded. We flew in and stayed mid September (around the 15th) -- until the end of the month (hit San Diego first - left on the 12th) -- it was GREAT! Hardly any kids - no crowds - awesome!
Hope that helps... don't know what your price range is but check out tripadvisor.com for hotel ratings. We stayed at the GRAND WAILEA in Maui - it was unbelievable -- your kid(s) will *LOVE* it -- the slides, the water elevator, etc... out of this world! Check it out on that tripadvisor site if you can. Other than that there is the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui which looked pretty. We loved the Grand Hyatt in Kauai.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
We've been to Kona (on the Big Island of Hawaii) twice with DD (once at 9 months and once at 20 months). My SIL lives in Kona. There was tons to do there with DD both times.
We also went when I was preggo and there is TONS to do as a couple.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
I love Oahu and how cosmopolitan Waikiki is, but I don't think you get the real feel of Hawaii if you only see Oahu. Maui and Oahu are so different from one another and both are worth seeing. I think we did three nights on Oahu and four or five on Maui and it was perfect.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
we went to maui, ohahu and Kauai
IMO for family, Maui is def. the way to go! there is so much to do, or not if you don't feel like it. oahu is great, but it's city like and very busy (which I loved) Kauai, I would only go w/ DH and I , I wouldn't bring children, not too much to do
we took a plane ride for each we did 7 days in maui, 3 days in oahu and 7 days in kauai.
