Who's Been to Hawaii??
Do you prefer Oahu or Maui?
DH, DD and I are going in September. Which island would be better for a family? I know there is more to do in Oahu but Maui is more relaxing. TIA for any help or advice.

I've never been, but you can book flights and split your stay between the islands.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
We went to both and LOVED maui!!! We'd go back in a heart beat if we could.
To do both, you just take a little plane to the other island (about 30 minute plane ride).
Honestly for the family, i'd choose maui. Unless your kids are older, then i wouldn't choose oahu since its more like a mini nyc.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
We went to Maui and Kauai on our honeymoon. Both places were heavenly....not much to do on Kauai which was fine with us. We did a lot on Maui, but had no kids with us. You can book flights between islands.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
Our absolute favorite was kauai. But of the two you asked, I would say Maui. Oahu is very built up...we stayed on Waikiki beach and we wish we would have gone elsewhere.

This is exactly what I was going to say!! I would say skip Oahu, I spent 4 days there & It was a complete waste. Maui was amazing, fun, perfect.

Yeah we weren't a fan of Oahu.
Kauai i've heard is gorgeous but very laid back and not much to do. So with kids... i doubt that would be a good choice.

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
I've been there 3x. I prefer Maui to Oahu. Oahu reminds me of Miami beach.
There is plenty to do in Maui, more night life in a vacation atmosphere. I've stayed at the Kea Lani in Maui and the Westin. Kea Lani was the BEST!
We've also done Kauai (loved this as well).

Kauai - we stayed at the Sheraton (that trip I booked all Starwood Resorts). We were on the South shore because it was recommended by a co-worker who lived there. He said for winter, stay in the south. If I was going again, I'd stay at the Princeville on the North Shore.
Westin was so-so in comparison to Kea Lani. It was north of Lahina. we thought it was great until we went to the Kea Lani. If we were to go again to Maui, we'd probably stay at Kea Lani (south of Lahina).

Re: Who's Been to Hawaii??
On our honeymoon we stayed on Oahu and Maui and did a day trip to the Big Island. We were sitting on the beach on Maui for 5 minutes when we were "planning" our first family vacation to Hawaii! We agreed that when the time was right and we actually had a family to take on vacation we'd go back to Maui with them (there were actually a lot of kids at the Hyatt where we stayed). But, being the history teacher, I would insist on taking a day trip to Peal Harbor (on Oahu). So, depending on the age of your children, you might consider a day trip to get some history in! Have fun planning!

If I was going again, I'd stay at the Princeville on the North Shore.
We want to stay at the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas when we go to Kauai.
On Maui we want to stay at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa.
Both Starwood properties because my brother works for them and I get the friends & family discount. But the Maui one is in Lahaina. What makes Lahaina so special?
