Need Advice! (More of a Vent)
Hi girls. I need advice on getting a teaching job. It will actually be more of a vent because I am just so discouraged with the whole process and waiting. I am so ready to give up because I can't deal with the disappointments anymore and DH and I can't afford for me to do subbing. I have heard it takes a couple years but I don't know if I can deal with it anymore. I have done a few leave replacements and have one for a few months starting this week but I am still getting sub pay because they aren't considering it a leave replacement. Then I go back to subbing after that which doesn't mean I will get called everyday. We are really struggling financially that I start looking for other jobs but I never follow through because I think of all the schooling I have done and the loans and I don't even know what to do. I do want to be a teacher. I love working with the students and it is so rewarding but when I keep getting we want someone with experience. I really get so depressed that I even start to think 'well when I get a teaching position will I even be able to do it' and then I start to doubt myself. I just keep thinking I will never get anything and I have been so depressed about it the last few days. I don't know what to do. I just keep thinking of our finances and if I don't get something soon I don't know what to do. Thanks for listening. I know you girls would understand.

Have you tried looking in the city? Yes the commute isn't the greatest but it is worth the money and the experience.

you should get a job in the city or at a private school. that experience will help you land a job eventually. good luck to you!

Im surprised that they dont see the leave replacements as enough experience
Then if one has lots of experience, they are too"expensive", you never win.
I know the feeling of subbing, it can be discouraging. I hope something comes up for you soon.
maybe you can also find an evening/weekend job for extra money, while to you sub, so you are still keeping your foot in the door?

I know exactly how you feel. I've been on interviews with no luck, I'm a permanant sub right now, but it's a frustrating situation. I think the girls had a great idea with applying to the city or private schools. It'll happen! Don't get discouraged!

This is what DH is running into. He is loosing jobs to 22 year olds out of undergrad.
Honestly, either try NYC or in NC or VA. DH is getting burnt out in the city (we live in suffolk, so its a long commute) and we dont want to move to nassau. We may move OOS in a few years.
my sister teaches outside of Richmond and doesnt make too much less than NYC teachers, and the COL is much lower!

Ugh...I know the feeling, DH had the same problem, no experience and no one wants to give you a chance. It's really disheartening. Hang in there, maybe try the city? That's what my DH did, although, it seems to be a long process of going through the system , it took DH months. Hang in there. :

Re: Need Advice! (More of a Vent)
I feel like you posted my thoughts exactly. After doing 3 leave replacements and working as a perm sub in one school, I'm going into my 4th year as a sub this week. I can totally relate to how your feeling.
What I can suggest however is looking into tutoring for extra cash. That is what I am doing this school year because I am in the same boat with lack of funds for bills with DH.

Look at private schools, parochial schols, charter schools, and maybe even GED programs or alternative schools (depending on your certification). Programs like SCORE and Sylvan Learning Centers hire certified teachers as well. Supplementing your income with tutorin is a great idea - I knew someone that quit her teaching job b/c she made more money tutoring and it's all in cash!!!
