SAT Prep

Hi Ladies,

My DS is in 11th grade, great grades, athletics, but not the best at taking standardized tests. What can I do the help him with SAT prep, since he does have a shot at a possible athletic scholarship

TIA

Re: SAT Prep

I teach an SAT prep class: have him memorize Pythagorean triples, know how to factor (x+y) squared, (x-y) squared and get him to understand to look for the opposite of what the question asks: Example: What is the greatest number, blah blah means he should find the smallest number first.

Barron's makes a good prep book, it should be at any major bookstore.

Re: SAT Prep

I'm a college advisor and guidance counselor in a Queens HS. Here's part of my SAT spiel:

The best way to prepare for SATs is to practice. "Cracking the SAT" is a great prep book put out by the Princeton Review. It has several practice tests, but also includes explanations why the corret answer is right and the others are wrong.

Reading is another way to improve Verbal and Writing SAT scores.

Your son may also want to look into taking the ACT. That test is also accepted by colleges for college admissions purposes, but for some students, can be somewhat easier. (It tests knowledge in different subject areas, and the questions are structured somewhat differently than on the SAT).

Good luck!!
