Treasures?

Does anyone use this reading program in 1st grade? I'm starting it this year and would love any tips you may have. I'm feeling overwhelmed about the amount of work there is. HOw do you manage your time?

You DON'T need to do it all. For the writing, I go through the unit and pick what I'd like to do with them and then do it. They CAN'T publish weekly and it does take us about 2 weeks and change to write and publish so if that means I do personal narratives but don't do reports until 3 weeks later, so be it.

THank you!!! How often do you meet with guided reading groups? Do you always read a book or do you sometimes do the fluency chart with small groups, or writing activities with small gruops? I'm so blown away that there is really only 1 guided reading book per week?! How deos that work??

Honestly...don't do the guided reading protion b/c my children are very good readers. When I DID, it was a completely separate period every week. Instead, I do other things that aren't Treasures based. It IS very overwhelming. I try to do the checkmark things. Also, days 4 andd 5 are so lights that you can take things from days 2 and 3 and put them in the other days if you can't squeeze things in. They have a lot of stuff to do.

I do everything except the Writing. We follow NYC writing sequence anyways. I hate IT!

eta-- I teach first grade. I squeeze treasures and guided reading into 2 50 minute periods. Let me know if you want my schedule!

Re: Treasures?

i used treasures for 2nd grade last year and kindergarten this year

it IS a lot! my school doesnt want us doing the phonics part bc we use fundations

as for guided reading, do u have an on level, below level, and above level library? Depending on your group you use the on, above and below

While you have a guided reading group, the rest of the class can do the center flip charts

Re: Treasures?

I just wanted to share something that I am starting to do.

I look at the weekly overview. It is the page with 5 columns, days 1-5. I choose what I want to do out of everything there. Then, I figure out WHEN I want to do them, not when the book tells me too. So if I do grammar on Wednesday instead of Monday, who cares. If some stuff scheduled for day 1 gets done on day 3, it is still getting done! Also, there is tooooo much in the program to fit it all into 2 periods or so. YOU are the teacher, not the book.

Can you tell I've been up since 3:30??? Guess what I did in that time! Chat Icon
