NYC and maternity leave? Updated w/FYI

DH and I aren’t TTC yet, but I like to be prepared and no one can give me a straight answer…

Anyone know the rules of maternity leave? I’m a NYC guidance counselor, and I want to take at least a year off after having a baby. When I come back, can I have my job back? Do they hire someone for a “leave replacement” like they do on LI? Or does my school hire another counselor and I have to find a job elsewhere? I’m so confused, and going to my union rep is basically a waste of time. Can anyone help?


ETA FYI: I spoke to my borough rep today. I can take up to four years off (unpaid), and I'm entitled to return to my job in my school. Hope this info helps other NYC teachers as well!

I'm a teacher in NYC. When I went out for maternity leave in 06 they hired a leave replacement. I am on maternity leave again and they did the same thing. This is only for 12 weeks though, not a year. If your union rep isn't answering you, maybe you should call the union yourself. I had to call them recently and they actually answered my questions. i know that some teachers go on child care leave after their 12 week maternity leave. you can take up for 5 years for a child (i think) unpaid, without benefits, but you are guaranteed your job back. i don't think you are guaranteed your position as a teacher - u r just guaranteed your building. not sure how it works for guidance.

eta - ask your payroll secretary - they should be able to explain your options
