Spinoff: What MEAL can you make for less than $25???
I know when I take our family of 4 out to eat, it is WAY over $25 even at Wendys. Four Value Meals are over $30!! I can make 3 dinners for that and most of the items I have to buy can be used numerous times (seasonings, butter, oil, etc.)
"Italian" Dinner 1 Box of Pasta ~ $1.00 1 Jar of Sauce ~ $4.00 1 Loaf of Bread ~ $$1.00
BBQ Ground Meat for Hamburgers ~ $5 Hamburger Rolls ~ $2.50 Ketchup ~ $3.00 (can be used for many meals) Potatos for French Fries ~ $3.00 Oil for Fries ~ $6 (can also be used for many meals)
Alt. BBQ (Meat is always on sale, buy what's on sale) Bulk Pack of Pork Chops ~ $6 Steaks on Sale Hot Dogs Ribs
Tuna Salad Elbow Pasta ~ $1.00 Tuna ~ $3.00 Mayo ~ $3.50
Veggie Pasta Zucchini ~ $2.00 Squash ~ $2.00 Eggplant ~ $1.50 1 Can Crushed Tomatos ~ $1.00 Linguine ~ $1.00 Onion ~ $.50 Ricotta Cheese ~ $3.00
Pork Roast Pork ~ $8.00 Rice ~ $1.50 Carrots ~ $2.00 Salad $2.50 Butter, Seasonings
There are so many more, i'm just wondering how many people actually believe you can't feed a family on a low income. What cheap meals do you feed your family?

So many things I can't even list to be honest. But I think the point here is getting MORE than one meal for $25.

I can make most meals for less than $25. But I think most people would be hard pressed to make 2-3 meals for $25!

Re: Spinoff: What MEAL can you make for less than $25???
I think about 75% of my meals cost less than $25. I stock up on meats when they are on sale. Unless, I make something with Veal or Lamb I am definitely under the $25 mark for my family of 4 (although both children are under 4)

Re: Spinoff: What MEAL can you make for less than $25???
I honestly think most of our meals are under $10 for 2 of us....we only buy meat on sale and other ingredients as well--we really decide what we're going to eat based on that. We typically keep it simple, a meat, veggie and a starch (rice, potatoes, pasta). Sometimes we use frozen veggies (very inexpensive) and we supplement it with whatever fresh veggies are on sale. We don't get too fancy....simple food, less ingredients. Meat we will typically marinate or season with dry seasonings....
I would venture to say we have never made a meal that cost over $25....granted, just for the 2 of us....

Wow-that's a good deal! Was it a local brand? Some brands are $9! ( Like Rao's which I bought once on sale & didn't even really like)
For me, making my own is usually the best value.
I'm not going to debate if other people are spending too much on groceries, but if any one is intersted, here are 2 of our cheap & easy favorites are:
Sausage, beans & rice
Uncle Ben's Instant Brown rice ( non -instant is probably cheaper, if you have the time) Goya red beans or kidney w/ sauce Shady Brook Farm's spicey Turkey sausage.
Basically take the sausage out of the casing, brown it , like you would ground beef, heat beans, cook rice according to box, mix it all together.
We use 1 can of beans, 1/2 box of rice & 3/4 lb sausage for the two of us & have about 1 large lunch sized serving left over.
My other favorite use of the spicy turkey sausage is cooking it the same way, but serving it wth orrichette & brocolli rabe sautteed w/ garlic.
I don't know the exact prices of everything, but yesteday the turkey sausage was $3.

Re: Spinoff: What MEAL can you make for less than $25???
I bought a $9 perdue oven stuffer yesterday and made that for dinner. I made some carrots and potatoes with it (they didn't cost much - $5 or so)
I have enough chicken left over to make quesadillas and fajitas for dinner today and chicken salad for DH's lunch for a few days.

Re: Spinoff: What MEAL can you make for less than $25???
I just made one last night that was GREAT!!!!! (and easy)
Parmesan Shrimp Pasta
*Shrimp $9.99 for one pound of jumbo (really yummy) shrimp at Uncle G's -- already cleaned, deveined, good to go!
*One pound of Barilla pasta - $2.99
*One jar of reduced fat (it is not as "rich" - I hate when sauce is too much) Alfredo sauce - Bertolli's or something like that - $3.99
The seasoning/extra stuff I had at home so it didn't cost me anything.
Marinate the shrimp (make sure tails are off) in two tablespoons of EVOO, one teaspoon of cayanne pepper, one teaspoon of garlic powder, salt & pepper. Mix around - make sure it is even. Let sit for a five-ten minutes.
Boil the pasta - drain and put into a pasta bowl - mix in a small amount of the alfredo (warmed up on the stove) so the pasta does not stick.
Keep some of the other sauce on the stove and serve on the side so the person eating can choose their desired amount.
In a medium skillet put two tablespoons of EVOO -- on medium/high heat. Add one clove of garlic, minced. Let it simmer for a minute/two and then add in the shrimp -- cook for about 4 minutes on one side -- nice and flat (each shrimp) and then turn each shrimp and cook on the other side for 4 minutes. You'll see them get pinkish with a little bit of a reddish from the seasoning -- add a little bit more of the cayanne pepper and dump right onto the penne pasta. Sprinkle with some extra parm cheese on top for flavor!!
SERVE!
Goes great with crunchy italian bread.
SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!

Re: Spinoff: What MEAL can you make for less than $25???
Another great one is my fave chicken fajita recipe!!
Perdue Short-cuts -- one package for two people. Two packages for four people. They are like $4.99 at the store. They are already all done - and I usually buy the mexican one which is already seasoned and has the recipe on the back of it for the fajitas.
Just follow that recipe -- you need Sweet & Sour sauce, tortillas, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, one pepper, one onion - done!!!
It is healthy and delicious!!!!!!!
You can even look up other ways to make fajitas online and add your own flavor, based on what you like, to the recipe on the back of the shortcuts box!! I did this - came out SO good.

We buy Omaha Steaks and we can eat dinner with them for under $25. Add rice and cook up some some frozen green beans and you have a well-balanced meal.
