middle school teachers...
why do people say I'm crazy when I say I'd like to teach middle school students? I understand kids can be difficult at that age but it is really that bad?
I've thought about elementary ed and while I really like younger kids I don't think I'd want to teach them all day. I think I'd get much more out of teaching kids a little older. I don't think I can teach HS since I majored in psychology for my undergrad.

Re: middle school teachers...
Hey.... i teach eighth grade inclusion class. I have to admit I find it to be a difficult age group to work with especially since they're going through puberty and all the hormones are kicking in. Plus i feel that many students want to look "cool" in front of their friends. I do like middle school but somedays I miss workin with younger students. Everyone is different i guess.. :)

Re: middle school teachers...
I love middle school. I couldn't imagine any other grade. In fact, I often want to tell people who teach kindergarten that they're nuts, but I don't. Actually, I don't think they're nuts, but I appreciate that there are people who want to do it. I could NEVER teach the little ones. It's got to be much harder than what I do.

IMO middle school is the best of both world's, depending where their hormones are one day I am teaching HS and another elementary. I could never teach another level

I've been thinking about it for awhile and I mentioned it to DH and he thought it was a great idea so I think I'm going to go back! If I can deal with hardcore criminals I think I can deal with middle school students. Thanks for your support bon

Re: middle school teachers...
Good luck!
I'm not positive, but I think the certifications are the same for middle and high school (you said you didn't think you could teach high school with your Psych. degree). Elementary is a separate degree/requirement, but middle and high school are both subject specific and I believe require the same number of courses in the subject area.

Re: middle school teachers...
i'm a speech therapist at an elementary school... but my sister teaches middle school science. i tell her shes nuts, too- but she LOVES it! she said the kids are great, and being a younger teacher she really has a chance to make a difference with them. theres all kinds of after school things you can get involved with. she works with a prgraom at her school called "Girls on Track"- its like a track team, but they also do things to help the girls with self esteem, problems they might be having, etc. I would defnitely look into it

I am a first year middle school teacher. I have to say, I absolutely love it. I would not switch to another grade level.

Re: middle school teachers...
I have taught elementary, middle school, and high school. And, after speaking to many teachers at many different teaching levels, I think that the personality of the teacher is what determines what grade level they like. Many high school teachers say they could NEVER teach elementary school. Many elementary school teachers say they could NEVER teach students past 5th grade! Assess your personality and see what you think will fit.
As for me, I like the middle school. I don't think I could go back to high school.

Re: middle school teachers...
I know it's HS, but I love 9th graders! I think that's semi MS like - but with benefits, since they are not the big shots
as for certification, look into SS (for grades 7-12). You need 36 credits in SS and Psych counts for it. It's been a long time for me, so look into specifics - I don't want to lead you the wrong way
