DH found a GREAT deal on a 5 star hotel in Versailles, which is 30-40 minutes on the metro from Paris. it's a LOT cheaper than actually staying in Paris, plus DH said it is a gorgeous place to see. we would still go to the city everyday, or maybe skip 1 day to see Versailles.

WWYD?

On the upside, the Paris metro/train system is very organized and easy to use.

The only setback I would dislike is not being able to go out at night in Paris. You would have to find a taxi to get back to your hotel which may not be easy to do.

I agree with this. But definately if you have time take a day and visit Versailles!

We stayed outside the city in the Loire Valley at a B&B for two days. It was perfect for getting to see the castles, but we were about 2 hours outside of the city. For seeing the whole city, I would prefer to be in Paris. We went out and walked the city every night.

My experience of Paris nightlife is that staying out too late and drinking too much vino equals a 4 mile walk back to your hotel at midnights. Its nigh on impossible to get a taxi after 11 pm in Paris, I would stay right in Paris proper, and don't limit yourself in terms of time and transport.
