There may be a change in tenure procedures in the future, but anyone who has tenure will be grandfathered in. No one will loss their tenure.
However, as someone who has been working (through an intership) I learned that there is 25 million dollars spent each year in paying teachers who are in the rubber room. It is insane.
Currently, my school has 2 teachers in the rubber room. One for throwing a binder at a child and another for taking pictures of his penis with school equipment (Don't ask how we found out  )
They are both sitting there for over a year now, (1 tenured, the other not) and both are recieving full salary and benefits!

Not in this economy. I have major seniority and am pretty stable at my job. Not to mention i do make a good salary and am in a great district, but say i was in Nassau, i would prob make more. But i would never leave my security for more $

Yes, and they still are, but in the meantime, the loss of seniority transfer means that senior teachers don't have to be hired. They go into the Absent Teacher Reserve, and there was a move to fire them, but the union and the city worked out an agreement. Principals used to be funded for X number of teachers; now they get a lump sum, so many prefer to hire 2 newbies for the cost of one veteran, which I do understand.

Wow- that is ridiculous!
However, I still don't think even those of us who are tenured in NYC can be too comfortable. At the moment Randi Weingarten, in her role as AFT head, is planning to meet with DC's chancellor. Randi has said that tenure is NOT off the table as far as things that won't be negotiated. DC's chancellor wants Congress to declare a state of emergency on the DC system, and if that happens, it would allow her to end tenure there- for everyone.
I am sure KleinBerg is watching very carefully to see what happens there.

i think i misread the original post.
would i give up tenure in NYC for a tenure track position in LI for more money, yes.
would i give up tenure to stay where i am for a bit more money, NO.

No I wouldn't. There are always ways to make more money if you want to. Also, the way the economy is, it is too risky.
