Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
Honestly I would not. I am very satisfied with my masters +60. I just think a hostile adminstration or tough economic times could find schools looking to lay off the more "expensive" teachers. Odd things could happen. I am dedicated to teaching and am well aware of the arguments against, but am still grateful to have it and would not want to give it up.

Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
This week's Time magazine feature story is about the new (young) Washington DC schools Chancellor. She is trying to change a lot of things and has already fired a lot of teachers and principals. This is one idea that she is proposing. I'll bet that's where the conversation came from.

Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
Not in a million years. I have tenure. I also have a department chairperson who doesn't seem to like me for some reason. I've never done anything wrong, I've always done what he's asked, yet still - he hates me. I would imagine if I were untenured, I'd also be looking for a job at this point. Just not worth it.

ITA!!! tenure is worth more than the couple of thousand dollars more i might get from another district. security is worth more than anything.

Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
Do you mean in your current district or do you mean when changing districts? If you mean giving up tenure for more money within your own district I would say no, I would want to retain tenure. It is sooooo worth it! But if you mean getting tenure somewhere, then leaving and going someplace else to make more money, then YES!! I did this 4 years ago and I make considerably more money than I did before. I went from a low paying LI district to a top paying LI district and the difference is quite a bit. I ended up getting tenure here too so it didn't really matter.
That being said, I would never do it now because teaching jobs are too hard to come by. I am just grateful for a position!

Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
giving up tenure completely - NO
but like PP said - to go to another district and be tenure track - sure
I'm paid pretty well - so I never ever complain about my salary

Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
nope! i think job security is so important! i wasn't given tenure at my last district ( after 3 years, and all decent reviews ) BUT i got a new job making more than i would have been at the other district. when i was at orientation for my new job, there was a lady there- probably in her 50s, with 2 kids in college... who was leaving a tenured job in another district to make more money in my district. i understand wanting more money, but with 2 college tuitions to pay for, i would think job security would be just as important.

Re: Would you give up tenure in exchange for a higher salary?
In NYC where I feel that tenure doesn't mean as much..probably, if I also felt that besides the $ it would be a positive change (don't want to end up someplace miserable). But in LI districts where tenure seems to be more meaningful, then no way, not just for more $.

In NYC, sure without a doubt. But tenure isn't as "serious" as it is in LI. If I worked on LI, no I don't think I would give up my tenure.

It is interesting that you think that way because tenure is EVERYTHING in the city system. If you have tenure, there is a .005% chance that you would ever lose your job. It is insane.

Very true!! Tenured teachers in the city have huge job security. It is a huge reason why I choose to stay in the city. The worst thing that can happen to me is my position is cut and I get put back into the classoom. My FMIL works on the island and she told me to stay put. Too many people are losing there jobs due to budget cuts. Moving now makes me low man and having to put in 3 more years in. Not to mention in a specialty position, I am the first one to go. With a wedding coming and a mortgage to pay I am staying put!!

REALLY!?!?!!!!!!! WOW I had no idea!!! That's good to know! I thought tenure wasn't such a big deal in NYC compared to LI.

When I say "serious", I mean many people in LI have to go through a lot more to get tenure granted than in NYC. I hear story after story how many LI districts will keep you right up until the point of tenure and then say bye-bye! In NYC it takes a lot for a teacher not to be granted tenure, not just a board who decides they don't want to pay a tenured teacher's salary.
I do understand the comfort of tenure, no doubt about that. I just feel LI takes it to another level.

For now, but things are changing. The end of seniorty transfers is Joel Klein's way of making an end run around tenure, and it will not be his last attempt, especially since Bloomberg will probably win a third term. No one in the city should feel too safe, IMO.
