What is the policy for having a student teacher in nyc?

A 22yr old first year teacher in my school has a student teacher and is getting paid for having her in the classroom.

I was not aware that this was allowed for a teacher without any experience and was student teaching herself just last spring. Does anyone know what the policy is regarding this in the NYC DOE?

I don't think the DOE has a policy. Maybe the school placing them would. A teacher in my school had a student teacher her first year also. We all thought it was crazy but we are talking about the DOE Chat Icon

I feel badly for the student teacher! That's totally unfair!

yup, it's the DOE .. .good point.

When I was student teaching the policy was, the cooperating teacher had to be teaching for at least 3 years. That was in Long Island though. I would love to have a student teacher. Half the responsibility of lesson plans and 3,000 dollars from what I understand!

I teach on LI, and I've had some student teachers in the past... it's SO much more work than NOT having one. As much as it seems like it lessens the responsibility of lesson plans, it actually increases it because you have to work with your student teacher on his/her plans to make sure they're up to par. You rarely have any time to yourself during the day, and as far as compensation went, it was a credit from the participating school.

But yes, the policy in my district is the same -- the cooperating teacher has to be tenured. The thought of a first year teacher doing something like this, when s/he is still trying to learn the ropes him/herself, is just insane! It's WAY too much to take on in an already-hectic year.

I have an intern, and it's my 5th year... but I'm not getting "paid." I get a voucher from his school for 3 free credits. There doesn't appear to be any regulations re who student teachers can be placed with. Bless NYC.

eta: ITA with the PP that said that having a student teacher is harder than not. They're STUDENTS, meaning they're learning how to do everything for the first time. This means I have to teach them, in addition to my regular duties. It pizzes me off when people refer to my intern as a "helper." Um, no.

i am in same district as nel and ITA!

it was a LOT of work and all i received was 1.5 credit voucher from the school which is useless, it's not even a full class. i sold it for half it's value to another teacher in the building.

the DOE is nuts and shame on them for giving a frist year teacher a student teacher. a 1st year teacher has enough to worry about.

Where I student taught you had to be tenured to have a student teacher. I would have never taken a student teacher my first year....I was still learning myself!!

I teach on LI and you have to have tenure to have a student teacher. We do not get paid for having them, but do get credits from the school they go to to use to take a class.

funny - same thing is happening in my school (nyc). i think it is ludicrous. i don't know what the policy is but i don't think a first year teacher should have a student teacher regardless of policy - so stupid.
