NYC Boe teacher n maternity leave

I'm not goin on maternity leave anytime in the near future because I'm not even TTC but down the road it's good to know the guidelines in workin for the BOE. So here is my question....
I know we get 12 weeks paid or unpaid depending on sick days. However, i was reading in the paper that it said after 12 weeks your health insurance will end (obv. they are sayin you have to come back to work). However, my question is what happens if you have a baby in april.....then you take all 12 weeks which leads up to the summer. Would they stop your health insurance in the summer?? I'm confused on that...anyone know anythin or clarify me on the BOE...thanks!!!

Re: NYC Boe teacher n maternity leave

You would only take however much time until the end of school. You wouldn't need to take the full 12 weeks.

Also just so you know the DOE does not allow you to get paid for the full 12 weeks even if you have the days in the bank. They limit it I believe to 8 weeks.

Also if you had the baby say in January ...you do not have to go back to work in 12 weeks. You can go on Childcare leave. However you would have to pay your insurance and also that wouldn't be paid.

I teach in NYC and had a baby last January. Hope I was able to help!

I took 14 weeks leave- I had to begin my leave early because of complications.

Anyway, there is something called SLOAC, Special Leave of Absence Coverage. You are entitled to it after your 12 weeks. Not sure how long it lasts. I only needed it for two weeks.

However, make sure you follow up, as I found out the hard way that I was dropped anyway. Chat Icon Not sure if my payroll sec messed up or the DOE messed up. Hope this helps.

Do you HAVE to use the days in your bank???Can't you just take an unpaid leave of absense for 12 weeks?

You don't HAVE to use the days in your bank but 6 weeks after the baby is born, the BOE takes your CAR days for you (the 6 wks is what they call your maternity leave - the 12 weeks is when you add on the FMLA). So regardless if you have 5 or 50, you'll have none in your CAR when you come back to work.

Not sure if they would let you do a leave of absence knowing that you're pregnant.

I'm due today and will be on maternity leave once this baby is born so I've learned a lot. If you want more info fm me. I have a contact e-mail at UFT.

Teachers at my school also told me that we only have 6 weeks...C section or not and if you go over 6wks you must take the full 12wks. Apparently good old Randi W gave that up for us in the last contractChat Icon

I don't think that is correct. I went out on Sept 26th and came back Dec 6th. I was only out 10 weeks. I wasn't forced to take the remaining 2 weeks.

And C-section gets 8 weeks with a drs. note.
