How was your class today?
Mine kinda seemed calm after being gone.
I gave them the whole its a new year lets have a fresh start speech I think it worked
I hope everyone had a good 1st day back!

I like the idea of "fresh start" speech...
My class was ok. Although, at one point I got upset. I thought to start the day I would have the students write about the best part of their vacation and then share.
This took LONGER than planned (wanted it to take 20 mins, ended up taking a whole period). I kept telling them we need to HURRY UP because we had more to get to. When we finished up, a kid in my class said "Man, I was hoping that would take longer so we could waste TWO periods" 
I am a first year teacher and still second-guessing if I am doing the right things in my room... and I was really turned off by that remark.

Oh, trust me; it's not you. They just did NOT want to be back at ALL today. My classes were fine, but one girl is as transparent as a glass window. The INSTANT I said, "Ok, let's go over this!" in my 10th grade class, she came right out with, "How was your Christmas?" It took all of my willpower not  Actually, I think I might have... as I said, "Great, but we're talking about the books now, thanks."
It's not you. It's school. And it's school after many days off. Take heart! They'll be better tomorrow.

Thanks!! I kept trying to tell myself not to take it personally, but especially after the break I feel like I forgot how to teach! I feel like my mind is still in a shopping mall  So, when my student said that, my first thought was that my student was right!! 
I am under so much stress this year, I wish there was something else I could do next year. It just wouldn't make sense since I'll be TTC in about a year, so I just need to stick it out with this job just a little longer.....
(I am imagining Dori - "just keep swimming, just keep swimming... just keep swimming swimming swimming...." )

we had "random scanning" today so that def started the day off right for them.
But I prefer to work the system. I tell them upfront that they have only a 10 minute lesson and they have group work for the rest of the period. (Group work = socialization) It's a win-win.

Mine were hyper. Like they forgot they're not on vacation anymore.
I tried to go with the flow.
Overall it was okay but I was exhausted by the end of the day.
