Went to a baby safety class today - some of the things I learned:

Walkers are bad and have been banned in California and will be banned in other states shortly.

Baby holders (Baby Bjorn, etc) put pressure on a baby's spine...the slings are a much better option.

Two of the most dangerous items - high chairs and cribs (we ordered something called a feeding table which is low to the ground instead of a high chair).

Jumpers that hook to door frames are very dangerous and put pressure on spine and lower back.

HTH! Take it for what it's worth Chat Icon

Jesus H. Christ, they like to scare the crap out of us, don't they?Chat Icon

If you look at what are "walkers" now, they don't have wheels. They are stationary and just for play and for the baby to stand in it.

what is so dangerous about a crib and where do they expect you to put your baby to sleep?

not all cribs! the teacher explained to us that many cribs have been recalled b/c of slats that are too far apart between them (a popular PBK crib which is where I ordered my crib from was recently recalled). Also, it is important to keep moving the mattress down as your child gets older and some mother;s don't do this b/c it hurts their backs to pick up the baby. A lot of the problems stem from the baby trying to climb out or they get stuck somehow in a crib that is not safe.

I was going to suggest that it was the baby getting stuck. My neice gets stuck in her horrid Ikea crib. My SIL is nuts.

Yeah, he mentioned the exersaucer's are bad too...they are bad for development apparently. Listen...I know to take this stuff with a grain of salt...just thought I would share what I learned. Chat Icon

Yeah, with my first 8 years ago. They tell you that high chairs are so unsafe so you will buy their feeding table.

Someone else on here went to one recently as well.

Ya think? Too bad they didnt list stupid or neglectful parents as a danger. (I am NOT saying anyone on this thread is stupid) That at least would have been useful. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Is this the table? It's a good idea, if only it were a little bit more attractive...

Not to mention that the child in the chair looks like popular comedian Peter Kay (okay, and I know that none of you know who I am talking about, so here is a picture)

not quite. they weren't implying that parents that put their children in high chairs and cribs are bad parents. they were saying statistically the most accidents happen in high chairs and cribs.

well, safety is a little more important than being attractive, but i agree that the chair is not the most pleasing to the eye.

Re: Went to a baby safety class today - some of the things I learned:

I THINK the crib thing sure, but you cant avoid that sicne sometimes A baby needs to be unsupervised in a crib.

BUT the walker/high chair thing...well I think if your leaving them for even 1 minute unattended, you are an idiot and thats where this results from.

I am ALL for safety. Im actually really reading up on it etc.

But I think the most accident occur because of human error, ie...not paying attention

I am trying to find out how much these feeding tables cost, just out of curiosity...Babee Tenda's website doesn't say how much they are, but I did see a used one for $300.

I am intrigued...

I see...things that some people just don't necessarily know about! Gotcha. I was seriously thinking, what could it be? Chat Icon this stuff makes sense...MAKING the crib unsafe or poor manufacturing!

You have to take it all with a grain of salt.

My son used his exasaucer from 4 months till he was too big for it. He walked at 10 months so I don't think it hindered his development at all.

Companies will say anything to get you to buy their product.

Baby bargains book mentions some of those things.

I don't know about California but walkers have been banned in Canada and result in many accidents - Baby bargains calls them death traps. I don't necessarily agree with that -we are not getting one but I think there are some parents out there who don't watch carefully.

They also mention that the exacauser can hinder development if they spend more than a few minutes a day in them as they can't see their feet or something to that effect.

The high chairs for the most part have corrected a lot of the flaws (where babies could slip out the bottom under the tray.) In general if you put your baby in something high up you need to be vigilant and not leave them or ignore them. I think overall most new ones are safe.

I think this presentation while helpful sounds like it was designed to scare parents into buying their products.

Re: Went to a baby safety class today - some of the things I learned:

Consumer reports had some feedback on Babee tenda- its not that safe-Nothing is you just have to be careful.

I went to the sales pitch a few weeks ago. One woman there called someone at home to research them on Consumer reports and told us about it.
