Re: Are we ready for the ELA???

yep... IMO, it is what it is...

Luckily though I work in a school where we are not encouraged to teach to the test too much. I also work with self-contained kids so I am happy with a 2...and when most of them get a 3, it's amazing for them!

Same here.

Although, we do teach to the test.

I have no clue how they will do, but the way I see it, there's one week left to prepare, so if they don't have the skills down by now Chat Icon I don't know what to say.

Re: Are we ready for the ELA???

I think so. I just gave last year's test on Friday, and they did really well, so I feel good. I just hope they put effort into it, and not race to finish, just to sit there. I will be glad when it's over. Then it's on to math!

Re: Are we ready for the ELA???

this is the first year (in 5) that i really feel as though the majority of my class is ready. those who are not, are ELL and wont be ready for another year or two, when they can actually read and write in english. poor kids!

i am ready for all of this to be over!

sure... basically, i teach the way I always teach. i do plan my curriculum though around the test, so I am teaching things that will be on the test before the test and not later in the year. I also, with the help of my aide, do as many as the modifications that they will actually get during the test while we practice. so, for example, all my kids get questions read on the listening portion, so I read them all the questions. some kids get a scribe for the short answer, i do that too. the only thing tricky with ELA practice test is that for Part I of the grade 5 test, it's ALL reading comp. i cannot read the passage or the questions, they just have to do their best. we do talk about highlighting key words in the questions, go back to re-read, etc.

i find it much easier to prep. them for Math and S.S. than ELA because at least I can read everything to them on those tests.
