Re: Xanax on a daily basis?

Having been treated for anxiety for many years now I can say that most doctors would not recommend using it on a daily basis.

If you require a medication they would much prefer, and often only prescribe, preventative meds for anti-anxiety/anti-depression because xanax doesn't necessarily go after the root cause...moreso just masks the feelings.

Not to say that I wouldn't love to take it everyday...however any doc I've ever been treated by only prescribes a limited amount of pills for a set period of time so I know that I need to only take xanax when I need it. I certainly don't get enough to take it every day.

So to answer your question, no,I don't take it on a daily basis and most docs will recommend that you do not. You're better off trying a different type of medication depending on what the issue is.

Re: Xanax on a daily basis?

I recently started taking Klonipin (kind of the same but considered a little safer) on a daily basis (I have terrible panic attacks) it makes a huge difference but I do not want to live on it. I have also been on zoloft for about 6 years.

Re: Xanax on a daily basis?

My mom takes it everyday and ever since she started I feel like her memory is gone. I blame it on the xanax. Its also not good to do because its highly addictive and you will have problems if you decide to cut down.

ITA!

I took it every day for about a week- when I was dealing with the worst anxiety. But as I started feeling less anxious I stopped taking it.

I don't want to have to depend on it to feel normal.

I also take prozac on a daily basis though.

Re: Xanax on a daily basis?

You shouldn't be taking it every day. Xanax is a quick fix, not something that builds up in your system. sure, I'd love to take Xanax every day, but it will just become addictive and what you need is something that is in your body or therapy. There are other ways to help anxiety, not just mask it as Xanax does.

DH takes Effexor for his anxiety every day and that's helped a lot.

I completely agree. There are other anti-anxiety meds that can be prescribed - Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac that can be taken daily.

Re: Xanax on a daily basis?

I would be careful with it-- it is a controlled substance and highly addictive. It is usually only used on an as needed basis, like for especially bad panic attacks. You would be better off going on an anti-anxiety medication like Paxil or Wellbutrin. Feel better!

ITA!

It's not a maintenance med. It's for episodal issues.

I take it an night once or twice a month to fall asleep if I'm having a lot of anxiety. Talk to your doc about going on a medication that is not addictive.

Good luck.

Re: Xanax on a daily basis?

I was prescribed xanax while in high school due to terrible panic attacks. I spent most of my time at home and missed a lot of school because they were just so horrible. I was on a combination of first prozac and xanax, and then zoloft and xanax. For me, it was the only way I could get through the day. Through a combo of therapy and the medication, I was able to finally get through the anxiety without medication and have been medicine free for awhile now. Like pp said though, it is a highly addictive substance and if not careful, you can start to feel like the only way you can get through anything is with the medicine.

I was on Effexor a few years ago and it helped. I've stopped taking it and saw someone about dealing with the anxiety. I take Xanax here and there to help with attacks.

Don't take it daily. Trust me, it is very addictive.

not true. Xanax XR is time released and meant to be taken every day. If you're on Xanax XR, you should never need regular xanax. I was on it for years a long time ago... it depends on the severity of the anxiety.

Of course with any medication, people SHOULD be seeing a therapist regularly... The medication doesn't work without the therapy.
