does anyone feel like people don't take you seriously?

my situation might be different from most of you because BM passed away but...do you ever feel like people don't take your "stepmotherhood" seriously? my boss has such a hard time when i tell her that one of the kids is sick and i need to stay home. she acts as if it should be my husbands responsibility soley because they are his kids. at one point she said to me "well isn't that your husbands problem?" umm no they are my kids too. HELLO!!!! just needed to vent i guess.

Yes, I do feel like that sometimes. That is awful of your boss to say. Glad she has such a perfect life that she can pass judgment Do not let anyone dimish your role. Keep doing a great job for those kids, you will be rewarded eventually.

FYI- FMLA gives you up to 6 days a year to take care of a child of any nature, so tell her to shove it!

I'm very lucky... My boss does not have biological children of her own but does have stepkids, so she is as supportive of me as a stepmom as she would be of a biological mom.

Most people take my role seriously... However, I have this one friend who keeps acting like it just doesn't count until I have biological kids... She's annoying but clueless. I think it's cuz she was a stepchild and not so close to her stepmom. I just ignore her.

im not a step parent but my brother just got married..and his daughter was telling her mother ohh i have a stepmothe rnow and the mother was like not till im dead. how can she tell that to a a 9 year old.

Before I had my son, parents I worked with would say "Well, you'll see when you have kids..." And I'd tell them i DO, and they would say, "No, it's different..."

It even happened on here - I talked about my stepdaughter on the parenting board, and it got moved to here.

I've already responded to this post but I was just thinking about it and I remember when I was first engaged to DH this co-worker/friend of mine who is in her fifties and knows lots about life told me that being a stepmom is the most thankless job a woman can have. You are basically raising someone else's child and a lot of times get no appreciation or respect from many people because "it's not your child."

Well, I don't think non-stepparents really get it. I just am grateful to be my stepson's stepmom and don't need anyone to tell me he's less my family because we don't share blood.
