Need help with running
I have been running 2.5 - 3 miles at 5.5-7 mph at least 3 times a week for over a year now. (Usually 1/2 hour of running)
For some reason, I can't seem to get my breathing correct.
I tried 'slowing down' to 5.5 to taking more walking breaks btwn intervals.
Is there a way to properly LEARN how to breathe? I'd like to be able to run for 1/2 hour straight at a reasonable speed (6.5)
Its as if I cannot get a deep breath and when I breathe quickly, it doesn't seem like I get ENOUGH air.
are there any runners that could give me some advice as to build up my endurance?
Its not as if I'm new to running..
It's only on the treadmill (or jogging anywhere) that this happens... I can go for miles on a elliptical or bike...

Re: Need help with running
I don't know if this will help and I'm a sucky runner, but I do concentrate and try to inhale for 3, exhale for 2 or some pattern like that.

Re: Need help with running
are you breathing through both your nose and mouth? This is the only way I can run so that I get in enough air. and yes when i go fast it gets heavy but you eventually get used to the heavier breathing and can push through it.
If your looking to go further, than you probably want to slow down so you don't exhaust yourself. They say long runs should be run at a conversational pace, so no heavy breathing.
good luck!

Re: Need help with running
Get a heart rate monitor, and focus on your heart rate. Set a goal based on your maximum heart rate. I tried to do the same thing as you and was failing miserably. You may have to start slower, but you will establish a good aerobic base, and once you build that, breathing will fall into place!

I *try* to breathe in through my nose and breathe out through my mouth... HOWEVER... I have ALWAYS been a mouth breather and it seems as though I don't get air quick enough through my nose...
Even when I slow down I get *winded*
perhaps I'll try to start out even SLOWER and build up my pace...

Re: Need help with running
I'm a mouth breather and I have bad gums b/c of it. The periodontist (sp?) says that a lot of runners are mouth breathers. I would never get enough air in through my nose.
I don't really pay attention to my breathing, but every so often, I take a deep breath , kind of like a sigh. It helps a lot.

I meant breathing through both your nose and mouth at the same time- it takes some practice but gets the most air into you.
Also, maybe you have exercise induced asthma? I have asthma related to allergies which is made worse by running but i take a couple of puffs of an inhaler before each run and I'm good. Maybe see your doctor and do a breathing test- he may be able to give you a low dose inhaler to help.
I totally hear the frustration though- if it wasn't for my breathing I'd be a speed deamon, but because of it I often have to slow down.

Oh yes I do this! Both my nose and my mouth. I can't do the in through the nose out through the mouth thing.
I agree about the exercise induced asthma - I never even thought of that. I get that in the winter time when it is cold so I have to run indoors when the temp drops. Do you still have a hard time breathing when it's warm?
