I would have been freaked out alittle also. I don't think it's a biggy that you told him your first name. He may have been harmless...or he may have been a monster. Good thing your instinct was to be short with him.

Dh was going to kill me once when we were taking money out of the ATM late night and I opened the door to the bank vestibule for some weird man. I wasn't thinking- I was just being courteous. I'll never do that again.

Re: did something stupid need advice

That is really strange because yesterday my mother had a lady that came to her house with the same thing. SHe seemed harmless, and said that she was doing this magazine thing to get her daughter back. My mom ordered a magazine and the lady when on her way. The organinzation seems to help those people who went down the wrong road change and improve their life. I don't think you have anything to be afraid of. JMO

I wouldn't worry about it. He could just have easily overheard one of your neighbors yell out your name, trying to get your attention.

Don't stress.

I am sure it will be fine. I probably would have doen the same thing, so don't beat yourself up. As long as you never let someone in your house, you should be safe.

Re: did something stupid need advice

If you only gave your first name then don't worry about it. Your name may not be common, but it isn't unusual. If you gave your last name I'd be slightly more concerned, but even so, what can they do with only your name? Like someone else said, he could have just as easily looked in your mailbox and gotten a lot more information. Just remember in the future you're not obligated to give anyone any information about yourself, especially if they make you uncomfortable. Don't feel bad about saying "I'm sorry, you caught me at a bad time" and then closing the door.

Re: did something stupid need advice

Hi there - I don't think you were stupid at all, you were just being sympathetic to his situation and sent him on his way. It's not like you invited him into the house or anything like that, so I don't think you should worry about it.

Something very similiar to this actually happened to me about a year ago. It was a weeknight, around 8:00 at night and DH was working so I was home alone. It was raining too. So, the doorbell rings and I open it to see a guy with a clip board - he is supposedly taking surveys for new Dish subscribers and after asking how much we spend on cable, he started asking for personal information and I was extremely unconfortable at that point. I never opened the door more than a crack and had my foot blocking him from coming in - so I just told him that he would have to come back during the day as this was not a convienent time for me and shut the door. I remembered thinking how strange it was to be doing "surveys" door to door, in the rain so late at night - so I was really freaked out and called DH - who was on his way home at that point. Well, after telling him what just happened, he freaked me out even more by telling me to call the police! I didn't, but he still stayed on the phone with me until he was home. Maybe it really was someone doing surveys, but to do them in the rain, in the dark, so late in the evening??? That seemed a little odd to me, and still to this day I think something was really wierd about the whole thing and I'm glad I followed my gut, even if I felt a little bad about seeming rude. Better to be safe than sorry - and you have that right when dealing with unexpected solicitors at your home, especially when you are alone at the time.

Re: did something stupid need advice

A similiar situation just happened to my friend... this organization must be doing a magazine drive in some areas...his "sales pitch" was just probably not as polished as some of the other people... nothing to worry about...
