I have a stupid dilemma that I need advice about

I have been planning on going to a hypnosis for weight loss seminar for the past month with some family members. (as silly as it sounds) and I have really been looking forward to going. It was supposed to start at 7:00 pm and is an hour away from my job.

My principal sent out a memo this past Wed. stating that the 7th and 8th grade teachers have to train to score the practice ELA exams on Wed. and Thursday from 2:30-5:30 after work. This would be 6 hours- 3 per day toward our 12 mandatory professional development hours.

I just found out that the seminar starts at 6 and we have to be there by 5:45.

I am already waiting to hear back from my principla because I supervise the Academic center after school on Thursdays until 3:10 and asked her what to do in regards to the training, since it would cause me to miss 40 minutes of the second day of scoring. I was thinking of asking her if I could go the first day, where most of the training would be taking place and make up the other 3 hours doing something else due to a previous arrangement. I don't want to tell her that I have a previous appointment (I especially do not want to tell her where I am supposed to be going) yet I really want to go to this seminar (as stupid as it may sound to some)

So here is where I need your advice- do I just get over it, do my training and forget about the seminar, or do I speak to my principal (what would I tell her?) about making up the hours?

I know this sounds so childish, but your advice is appreciated as always!

I'd do the teaching thing because it's good for your development credits. If not for that, I would have said to go with your original plan.

I think you should try and go to your seminar if it is important to you (and it is not stupid!)

If you can get away with it, I would do it.

It's not stupid at all, but I think that you'd be better off dealing with the work stuff. It's too bad the time was changed so close to when you were supposed to go.

Yes, this is how I kind of felt, that work comes first and that I should just pass on the seminar, but then I thought I was just being stupid and chicken and not speaking up.

I guess my thinking is normal and that others would also just **** it up.

I agree with the others - work first. If the seminar is really important to you than you can explain that you had a previous commitment that you can't get out of - if she pries further than you can just say that it's personal.

On the other hand, if you blow off work - stress can make you drop weight just as well.Chat Icon

unfortunately I agree, I guess work would ave to come first, that ***** though! Maybe they'll have the seminar another day. By the way, I've been looking into this myself, where/when is the seminar taking place?

when does the ELA training begin (meaning date)? if you were not given ample notice and it is not one of your job requirements (aside from the prof. hours), then i would tell her that you have a previous engagement. tell her that you are interested in the training and inquire about alternate training dates. if it is short notice i am SURE that others will be unable to attend as well.

While I agree that the job always comes first - I also can't see the harm in just trying. If you ask and she says no - at least you tried.
