I am thinking of getting a small group together and just want to see what's the norm.

Keep in mind for my group, they are 6. Chat Icon

no way. lunch is my only time to myself and to be with adults. and i think it's important for kids to have that recess time with their friends. i know if it was my son, i wouldn't want him giving up his only "fun" time for more academics.

i have extra help twice a week before school.

We have mandated extra help time once a week on designated days after school. It boggles my mind that kids EXPECT us to give up our off periods if they coincide with theirs, so we can help them... just because they don't want to stay after to come to extra help. So maybe that's a different situation. If it weren't mandated that I stay? Then I probably would do it at lunch occasionally.

our contract includes one hour of extra help each week - most teachers use some part of their lunch period for the help..usually two days a week

I do offer lab makeup if necessary. I think it has only happened like 2-3 times the entire year.

Hell to the no! We are highly discouraged from doing ANYTHING, including "emergency" meetings during our lunch. We have a prep. period for that stuff!

no no no! In my district we have to do 1 hour of extra help, and we usually do that before or after school. My union would not really "condone" extra help during a lunch period, especially since they fought very hard for a duty free lunch period.

Here's the problem. We have extended day afterschool which is mandatory. BUT I don't have my own kids. I have 4th graders. So this time that I HAVE to give isn't for kids in my class who need it. Hence why I'm thinking of doing this.

No and it would be frowned on by the union to do so voluntarily. If many teachers started doing it on a voluntary basis, then who's to say it won't become required of us in the future under the pretense of "well, you were already doing it." We have before and after school tutoring for math, science, social studies and ELA, but it's a paid position.

I agree...and I don't really think it is appropriate for 6 year olds to stay in during recess for extra help.

Could you get your kids to start staying for extended day and nix the fourth graders? I don't get why they mix the grades and teachers up...so silly...

I think it's too late in the game and although I ask EVERY year for my own kids, I don't get them because 3/4 of them are not zoned for us and it becomes a bussing issue. Chat Icon
