Newsday's back to bashing teachers again..
http://www.newsday.com/services/newspaper/printedition/sunday/news/ny-lipay016062272mar08,0,6351118.story
And while I agree that it's ridiculous that we are getting crazy increases in some cases, it boggles my mind that all Newsday ever seems to want to do is feed the anti-teacher frenzy. I make the mistake every time of clicking on the comments readers make on the message board over there, and my blood just starts to boil whenever I read about how "easy" our jobs are and how we work a six-hour day for less than 10 months a year and have the cushiest jobs in the world. Yeah, ok.
Just had to vent. Newsday just makes me NUTS sometimes.

Anytime someone says that teachers have an EASY JOB and that we should work harder for the money we make, I would LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to put that person in my classroom for the day.
When the school day ends, I usually have AT LEAST another 2.5-3 hours of work to do-- and that's on a GOOD day! With all the grading, planning, etc., I am usually not finished until 6 or 7 at night- and mind you, I wake up at 6am.
I can't help but at people who are ignorant and think that teachers have EASY jobs. I am just so thankful that the parents of my students are SOOOO appreciative and give me a hug at parent conferences because their kid has made so many improvements.

I was a journalism major in college and now a teacher... I have to say that article was very one-sided and biased... it was very disappointing to see...

Re: Newsday's back to bashing teachers again..
Everytime I see something I like that I just think to myself, how lucky I am to have such a great job and how jealous all these people are that they picked the wrong profession.
Keep crying baby, nothing is gonna change. I work 180 days a year and you probably work 300, but who's counting
If I got upset everytime someone commented negatively about teachers I would be mad very often, so I make a joke and pat myself on the back for doing a great job with their kids.

I know what you mean. I was a newspaper editor in college and am now the newspaper advisor in my school (as well as the journalism teacher) and am tempted to bring that in as an example of what NOT to write.

The sound off board on News 12 is another place where we are bashed constantly. Some of the people who comment are so ignorant.

Re: Newsday's back to bashing teachers again..
Teachers will always be easy targets. I think things will get worse, bashing-wise because of the economy, for everyone who has some sort of public sector job.
The consensus seems to be that we don't deserve our pensions and health benefits. But I remember a time when private industry was doing better and my friends with corporate jobs had 401ks with company matches and all sort of perks that we'd never have. Now the shoe is on the other foot and apparently since so many others are losing jobs, we should suffer too.

What makes me laugh is that when they talk about teachers making over 140,000 they don't talk about how long it takes to get to that point in your career and how many of us still make what is an average salary.....

Re: Newsday's back to bashing teachers again..
I agree with MrsProfessor. Whenever the economy gets bad, public service jobs get badmouthed. When times are good, working in the private sector is the way to go. When the economy starts tanking, politicians hate unions and go after us right away because we cost the public money. The media hops on the bandwagon, too. It's not just us, they bash cop and fireman unions, too. That aggravates me even more. Why don't these people sign up for these jobs if they are so bitter? When times are good, they aren't so appealing. But now, hmm. Well, tough luck!!

ITA! We do have awesome jobs. As someone who is a career change teacher I've seen both sides. We bust our azzes but we have lots of perks that many jobs just don't.

and no one bashes the doctor and lawyer who make that OR MORE! and teachers are JUST as educated (especially the ones that are at the highest step/credit)
Where did they get their info?
Cold Spring Harbor, for example, signed a new six-year contract in October, under which salary scales will rise slightly more than 6 percent annually, district officials say. In turn, teachers' contributions to health care costs will rise gradually, from 10 percent to 16 percent while they're working, and from zero to 15 percent after retirement.
they did NOT get 6%...it was 3.5% Do they just make up numbers and throw the superintendent's name in there to make it look like she gave the info?

Re: Newsday's back to bashing teachers again..
i am ready to cancel my subscription to newsday. the problem is there is no other newspaper for the island, and i'm not a daily news fan.
that article made me sick. i have friends and relatives who make my salary each year as their BONUS. i will never be eligible for a bonus. they get everything covered--car, gas, food, etc. you'll never read about them in newsday.
i count on my salary just as anyone else does. i have to pay my mortgage for my overinflated LI house just as everyone else does. so because some unfortunate people have lost their jobs i should take a pay cut? we're all struggling in one way or another. DH could lose his job any day and we could lose our house. at least we have the stability of my job to get us through. NO ONE deserves to lose their job, but don't take it out on the teachers.
newsday is getting outrageous. any ideas on what we can do???

I think you might be talking about 2 different things. I assume you're talking about the general wage increase of 3.5% (i.e. the salary at a particular step is now 3.5% greater than it was the year before). When the article discusses the salary scale increasing by 6%, I believe the 6% is overall increase of the salary account (general wage increase plus step). A 3.5% wage increase is not just a 3.5% increase to the overall salary account b/c there is a significant cost by people simply moving up a step each year. Anyone not on the highest step will get the benefit of the 3.5% general wage increase plus the increase by going up a step. Hopefully, this made sense.

Re: Newsday's back to bashing teachers again..
I get so livid when I read about how "teachers only work 10 months out of the year" BLAH BLAH BLAH. I want to challenge ANYONE who says that to come into my classrooms for two weeks, do the planning and grading and SEE what it's REALLY like to teach today's children.
I think we need BIGGER raises and deserve to make more than actors/actresses who merely provide entertainment for our society. We provide so much more and are always underestimated....idiots!

i read this article today. it is so frustrating because this kind of one-sided information leads to budgets being voted down.

My union is trying to organize a mass cancelation of Newsday for this reason. The things that they say about teachers are so disgusting.
