Well, HOW do you answer THIS one?
I have a little note jar where my kids can leave me notes. They tell me EVERYTHING from getting new sneakers, being sore from playing whiffleball to getting chocolate pancakes over the weekend. BUT I also get these questions from a few random kids. Such as...
Did the universe really start with a Big Bang?
He's 6.

That's not a bad question. I'd tell him that scientists believe this is what happened & there's plenty of evidence for it. I don't know much about 6 year olds, but you can go in more detail if he can understand it.

I have that part down but it's the whole creationism aspect that makes me go . I know that a lot of these kids go to religious school where they are taught that god created the world. The big bang theory kind of goes against that.
I wrote him this little note that explains both theories and then I told him that nobody knows 100%. It could be one, could be the other, could be both, could be neither. Then I wrote, "What do YOU think?"
Poor kid...

Re: Well, HOW do you answer THIS one?
I think you handled it really well & I like your response to him!! But, I don't think Big Bang goes against the belief of God creating the world. He had to create it somehow! I don't think most kids in religious school are taught that God actually created the Earth in 6 days or any of that... I know I was never taught that. When I teach my students evolution, I tell them there's plenty of evidence for it but they don't have to believe it if they don't want to... I can't talk about religious beliefs very much since I work in a public school, but I let them know just because they believe in evolution doesn't mean they can't believe in God.
