IMO, that would be enough for me not to feel comfortable working there at all, so I'd have no problem reporting it. But if you want to keep a good relationship with the people involved, then I don't know. That's kind of a tough spot to be in.

I would probably change the subject more toward the job I'm interviewing for.

I'm dedicated to my job & will do what it takes to get the job done.

As for the hours I work now & the vacation I get, I'd say something along the lines of "What hours does this job require?" "I have ample time, what does this position offer?"

I'd probably let HR know that the manager needed some training. Just because I'm not the litigious type doesn't mean that other people they interviewed aren't.

I guess for me it would depend on how much I wanted the job.

If it was something that I was dead set on, then I may overlook it even though it was illegal but I would question what type of hours they were really expecting of me.

If it was something that I was lukewarm about I may mention it to HR.

I wonder if theres any tactful way of asking how that pertains to the job and how you feel that it doesnt and feel uncomfortable answering it b/c of that.

Thats how I would want to answer it.

I would say simply....My family life has no impact on my job production what so ever.

In a taticful way, ask if this information pretains to the job...

or just say I would prefer not to speak about my personal life at this time.

About the children thing, you can say that my children are taken care of...Just plan and simple...

i went to an interview like this and the first time they asked, i didn't realize the ?s were illegal. i also was unemployed and was eager to grab the first thing offered. however, the second time the questions were asked I was annoyed and decided that although still unemployed, i had to maintain some sort of standards. I was asked how long i was married and what my family plans were. I didn't answer directly - said that my husband and I were very career focused right now. They repeated the question and i smiled sweetly and said 'im sorry but i don't understand what this has to do with my ability to do the job?' i knew that answer probably blew my chance at the job (and i was right) but at that point i didn't care.

ETA: This was a tiny company, no HR dept and it was only one of several factors that demonstrated how it was run. the owner carried a prada, designed a gorgeous office and walked around it what was clearly very expensive clothes. Yet didn't offer her employees health insurance or even claim them as full time employees - all filed as freelancers so she didn't have tp pay taxes on them.
