Any live by a railroad?

I saw this really nice house online in Lindenhurst but when you map it it looks right on top of the railroad tracks. Opinions?

Honestly, I have a friend who lives near the railroad - as it's right next to her house. When it's an express train - wow is it loud!

I grew up in Bethpage, 3 blocks from the train station. Sure there was noise but you tune it out and aren't even aware when the train is coming. Plus is was so convenient to live in short walking distance of transportation.

We recently moved back in with my parents for 6 months while we did major renovation to our new house. The first week we were there DH was like wow, it is loud here....but After 2-3 weeks he had totally tuned it out. Now when my niece (18 months) comes over, she always says choo-choo when she hears the train and it always takes us a minute to figure out what she is talking about because we dont even hear the train! LOL

Sorry so long.....I wouldnt let the train be a negative for the house. JMO!

My ex lived in an apt. in Lindenhurst and the back faced the RR tracks. After a month I hardly noticed it.

My old apt. in Northport also faced the tracks in the backyard. But I never noticed it at all really.

As long as you arent by a crossing gate and they arent blowing the whistle, it really isnt that bad IMO.

I would look at the house, it may look like it's on top of the RR tracks but it could be a block away. Good luck!

ETA: I also liked living close to the RR station because I work in NYC

i lived right on the tracks in Oyster Bay in an apartment i rented for a few years. It was so unbelievably loud that I hated it. While I did get accustomed to the noise and vibrations, it was really annoying when i'd be on the phone and a train would go by - - i'd have to "suspend" my conversation until the train has passed.

I didn't work int he city at the time - but now i'd love to be able to walk to the train everyday - - - though that previous apartment was just toooooo close.

I'd say check it out - it could be a great opportunity. Do you work in the city?

Which railroad tracks? There are 2 that run through Lindenhurst. One is passenger, and the other just carries empty cars twice a day.

PS, I live a block away from the Amityville station & it is generally unnoticable.

I LIVED IN HICKSVILLE BY THE TRAIN STATION ABOUT 2 BLOCKS AWAY AND AT TIMES YOU HEARD IT BUT THEN YOU LEARNED TO TUNE IT OUT AND ITS LIKE IT WAS NEVER THERE. ITS NOT SOMETHING THAT IS LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS.

I live about 4 blocks from the train station in NJ. We hear the train chugging in and out (not loud though) and the whistle. Not bad.

Alright, I'll put in my two cents.

I rented the top half of a high ranch for a little over a year in Bethpage, the house was right next to the tracks. It was awful.

The whole house shook when a train passed. To the extent that I could not display any really delicate crystal in my china cabinet otherise it would shatter.

You could not have your windows open in nice weather or else the train sounded like it was coming thru your house.

There was a diesel that went thru every morning at 2 a.m. and the conductor, on a good day, would only blow the horn 10 d*mn times to signal he was coming thru.

Bethpage is the Ronkonkoma line, so it was pretty active throughout the day.

I suggest you ask about the tracks, which line they belong to and then check the LIRR schedules. Better still, ask for a showing of the home when a train is coming thru.

The house is on railroad ave, can't get any closer than that. There are having an open house on 6/26 so I guess there is no harm checking it out!

I grew up all my life next to the Northport Train Station and to be honest, you just become immune to it. I really never knew when it was coming or going. I think your brain just tunes it out. At first it might take some adjustment, but before ya know it...you willn't even know it is behind you.
