Questions about unemployement wages.
DH lost his job this week when his company did a round of layoffs. He is going to be getting severance pay until the end of June. Does he have to wait until then to file for unemployment benefits or can he do that now?

I am pretty sure he can start immediately. Last year Scott lost his job and was given a package as well. He filed for unemployment right a way.

Re: Questions about unemployement wages.
He is eligible to file right away. Just and FYI- he loses the first week as a 'filing' week, so make sure he files right away.

Re: Questions about unemployement wages.
will he be getting one big check for all the pay until the end of June or receiveing checks each week?
If he will continue to get checks he can not collect unemployment until after the last check.
If he is getting one check for all the wages until June, then he can apply right away.
Sorry to hear this.

Re: Questions about unemployement wages.
It can start immediately. I got severance from November until April , I started collecting in January.

Exactly! I was just in a similar position. My severance was paid in one lump sum and I started collecting right away.
Sorry about the situation!

Yeah, I am not sure this is true. I lost my job in Jan and started collecting right away even though I got severence until the end of Feb. Each week when you go online to certify your benefits, they do ask you questions like "are you owed any vacation pay?" "Are you owed any sick pay?" I just always said no to that because they never asked "are you receiving severance pay?" -- just always answer NO to those kinds of questions and he'll be fine.
I'm sorry you are going through this. I went through it for 3 months and it was hard - I wish him all the best luck in finding a new position. Network, network, network!!!

yes but one of the questions are did you earm more than $405 for the week. If you are collecting checks from your job each week...most likely you are collecting more than $405. So that wasnt being truthful in your applying for benefits.

The earning more than 405 per week question, I believe, is asking if you earned it from employment including self-employment for that particular week. If you didn't work that week, you didn't earn it that week.
