Endorsement on Teaching License?
Although, I am looking to obtain a SC teaching license. Our plans might change and I'd like to try and maintain one in NY too in case we wind up ever coming back that way.
How do endorsements on the teaching license work?
Do you take a certain number of credit hours? Do they have to be graduate hours?
What endorsements do you have or know of?

usually most people once they have their first license (in your case SC) they just apply to the state education department of the other state they want a certificate in. many, many states have reciprocity with NY---which means, if you get a license in one of those states, NY will recognize it. however, to maintain a permanent license in NY you have to have a Masters degree, pass the NY state licensing tests, work in NY schools for at least two years and maintain professional development hours. i would get your first license first and then see where yuou are.... i wouldn't worry about it now.

I had no idea that you had to maintain a teaching record with the NY schools to maintain a license. Obviously, that won't work for me 
Not a big deal though....just looking into some suggestions my current professors are sharing. They tell me to maintain licenses in as many states as possible, since it's so easy. I guess not in NY....not surprised!

you don't need teaching experience in NY to get an initial license in NY. you will get an initial license in NY with your SC license and then they will tell you what to do to keep your NY licensure up to date. any state's license will eventually expire if it's not made permanent (which usually requires actual teaching that state). For example, I went to college in PA and initially had a PA license that was valid for 6 years from the issue date. I never once taught there and it expired and is no longer valid. i would imagine that this would be the case in most states. i think your professor's advice is kind of dumb.... a state is not going to grant you permanent licensure without doing anything in their state. i might apply for reciprocity to another state if i think i'll be movign there or what have you, but otherwise i wouldn't bother. otherwise, you will be spending money and time on state license exams and coursework to get a license you won't even use.

How do the endorsements work anyway? Is there a credit amount that will grant you an endorsement?

i coudl be wrong, but i always understood endorsements as things like a gifted and talented extension to an exisiting license, for example. basically, it's almost like another certification or a concentration within a certification.
extra credit hours and courses are usually done by a particular district and is used to put you on a scale for your salary. it has nothing to do with what your licensed in.
some states, even with reciprocity to the state where you hold a license, will make you take their state licensure exams and certain courses they require that maybe the other state didn't, to grant you a license.... but i wouldn't call that an endorsement.
does this make sense?
