help, extreme irritability

I dont know what to do. I am not myself and I cant take it anymore.
I get so mad, so frustrated, so angry over the smallest things. I cannot control it, I feel like I could scream, throw things, break things and once I have calmed down (like an hour later) im in tears because I cannot control my emotions. I guess it is irritability and anxiety? I take it out on DH and it isnt fair Chat Icon Chat Icon He doesnt get it, thinks im just being mean.

Take this morning for instance. I have a habit of leaving my shoes in our entry way. DH will calmly move them to our bedroom closet. This am, I went to leave and my shoes werent at the door(they were in the closet, put away by DH). I lost it, threw my bags down, stomped up the stairs, cursed DH for moving them (he was already gone) and got my shoes. I left and sat in the car trying to breathe, trying to calm down.

Its horrible Chat Icon The littlest things set me off.

Anyone else experience this? It has been on and off for months, at least 8-12 months.

I was on sertraline for about 4 months but I didnt really think it helped. Maybe I need to be on something else.

Re: help, extreme irritability

I'm the exact same way. We've concluded it's hormones and related to my period-PMDD. I'm only "calm" the week during my period and first week afterwards (and my cycle is longer than 4 weeks). Other than that I'm a wreck. DH gets the brunt of it all and it's not fair. I've taken Sarafem which is an antidepressant and it's helped al ot. Have you talked to your gyno about it?

thank god I am NOT alone Chat Icon Chat Icon It is horrible, sometimes I wonder if this is the beginning of me going crazy Chat Icon

I have not, only my PCP. I took sertraline for about 4 months and I think it helped a little, but not enough to really make a difference. I decided to stop taking it about 4 months ago.

It could be PMS related but seriously, it is on and off all the time so I dont think it is. It is embarassing to say but I have no desire in bed Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon it is a constant struggle with DH, he is beginning to take it personally. I just really am BLAH all the time or going nuts for no reason Chat Icon

I have hypothyroidism so maybe that is part of it. I have put on about 10 lbs and I was a little overweight to begin with. I never want to go out, just want to sit on my couch with a blanket and a glass of wine and be alone. Chat Icon

Mine's on and off too, but the really low points have tended to be in that "PMS" period. Try keeping a little journal to see if there's a pattern. When I'm low too I have no desire to be with DH in any capacity. I become a complete loner too. Maybe we can be miserable together.

Re: help, extreme irritability

I have been this way too.. but it is usually something that I shouldn't get SOOO mad about, but I do. I am not sure if it is stress, hormones, or just something underlining that I can not visualize right now.

It is hard because, DH might get me annoyed over something simple and it takes all of me to not fly off the deep end and scream. I took a day for my self and went to the Hamptons a couple weekends ago and that helped me De-stress. I don't know if that would help you. However it did not fix it totally because I got close to what you are describing on Memorial Day evening too.

yes, I get irrationally angry as well over the smallest things and it's usually aimed at DH. I've narrowed it down to an anxiety issue. I plan on making an appt with my dr to see if he'll prescribe me an anxiety med.

Re: help, extreme irritability

This is me to a 'T'. I've been this way my whole life and it's such a burden. I feel bad for DH a lot, b/c sometimes he doesn't know what hit him. I feel like it's almost like a physical thing. I don't think, I react. during those moments, I feel like I have 3000 things going on in my head and then one additional thing sets me off.

jess: how did you make the connection to it being anxiety? That's very interesting and I'd love to know how they relate, b/c I have huge anxiety issues.

Re: help, extreme irritability

I have the same issueChat Icon I've always had issues with depression, but the anger, hostility and anxiety came later on and is sometimes unbearable. I'm on Wellbutrin and have to take Xanax on a regular basis. The anger/anxiety peak the week before my period and I have been diagnosed with PMDD because it truly interferes with my life. My moods change so eratically and I feel like I have no control.

I would make an appt with you MD and see what other options there areChat Icon

Please feel free to FM me if you need to!

thanks girls. its so strange. today is a good day, so far. but tomorrow, who knows Chat Icon

val, i am totally for "its all small things in the grand scheme" but it just doesnt compute for my brain. I handle LARGE issues better than the small ones. Like death doesnt scare me, I'm not anxious about money or loosing my job. DH and I dont fight about large issues.

When it comes to little things, forget about it, I bite his head off Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon The other night, I had a glass of water on my night table. DH says to me "dont forget to put that in the bathroom or layla (cat) might knock it over." I told him "I know, got it thanks!!" Again about an hour later, he said "Kar, dont forget" ... I LOST IT! I told him "dont tell me, I know, I wouldnt forget about it, do you think I would forget to move it? I am not dumb... I know she will knock it over if I leave it ... LOST it... Chat Icon poor DH. He thinks I hate him sometimes but I just cannot control it.

sigh. I am afraid to have kids bc who knows what will happen. I will probably end up with depression or be the worst mom ever because I just cant handle the little things.

Heres a diagnosis:

Marriage! - :)

It will do it to you.

I admit, I've been there a few times but for me it was mind over matter. I've learned to think before I react. I can thank DH for that. He won't put up with me freaking out. He goes right back at me and puts me in place. I realize how immature I'm acting and I quit it.

this is totally totally me! I end up starting arguments with DH about the absolute DUMBEST THINGS! On Monday, I wigged out because he didnt take the garbage out- stupid but the fight went on for almost an hour! We had a major issue this week and didnt argue at all- that I can be calm about- makes no sense

Seriously, this is exactly me right now, except i dont' drink wine. Exactly why I didn't come to your Tupper party last night...I hate going anywhere and don't want to put my bad mood on anyone else.
I'm pretyt sure mine is hormone related as well, only mine starts with hatefulness 14 days before, lasts a few days, goes away and then after my period i'm sooooo sensitive I want to cry over everything.

I was kidding about the marriage. I'm sure it doesn't help the stress factor. GO to your doctor. Keep us posted.. Hope you feel better soon.

Have you ever had your thyroid checked? My thyroid is underactive and before I was diagnosed, I was a complete psychopath. It's all hormonal and once I went on synthroid, I was fine. Def make an appointment and see what it's about.

Same here - I didn't even realize how "off" I was until I started taking the synthroid. Now my emotions are completely in check, and I don't get so irritable all the time anymore. Before I would just lose my temper all the time over the stupidest things!

Re: help, extreme irritability

Honest to Goodness, please try a multi vitamin with an additional B Complex. Add in your essential fatty acids (Omegas 3,6, etc) and try a Probiotic Pill. I had PMDD very badly. Due to the monthly hormone fluctuations I experienced this for more than 2.5 weeks out of every month. It was all hormone and nutrition driven and not related to my neurotransmitters (which is what SSRIs combat). After a month or two of these supplements my irritability, rage and despair diminished to a very bearable and mild state. I added in exercise and a whole food diet and the combination of everything worked very well. Unfortunately now that I'm pregnant, no amount of nutrients or healthy lifestyle is enough to rid me of those dreaded feelings. But good luck to you....this could really work and has ZERO negative side effects.
