Can babies have long periods of awake/sleep? Or is this extreme?
DS is 7 weeks old and was mainly awake yesterday from 2:30am til midnight. He did sleep for 3 times during that period for about 15 minutes. Last night he fell asleep at midnight, woke up around 7am to feed, then fell back asleep. He's woken up a few times since, but mainly to feed, then he falls back asleep.
So basically, he was up for nearly 24 hours straight and now has mainly slept for 17 hours straight. He is eating. Is he trying to recover from yesterday's bout of crankiness? Is this normal?

My DS used to do that kind of stuff too. He wouldn't nap and then he'd crash for an entire day. Once I got him more scheduled after reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child things got much better.

Re: Can babies have long periods of awake/sleep? Or is this extreme?
Between growth spurts, bouts of gas, and just plain fussiness all babies go through patterns of extreme wakefullness and sleepiness....Sometimes it seems as though all DS does is sleep and then others its as if he hasnt gone for more than a few minutes before he is awake again...then there are the times when all he wants to do is eat!!! Its nothing to worry about...in another couple of weeks he will be more scheduled with his sleep and wake patterns.

Cailen had the most erratic, sporadic sleeping patterns... I'm sure he did things like that... wasn't too fun for us!!!

DD is 7 weeks and went a few days where she slept almost ALL day, just waking up to eat, and then went right back to sleep.

DD did that in the early weeks. I remember one day in particular where she would not go to sleep and I called DH at work asking him to come home and help me cause she would not calm down. The next day I called DH at work again to tell him I thought she was sleeping too much!
It all evens out.

Steven had days like that too. One time he took an 8 hour nap, was up for an hour then slept for another 8 hours.
When they are sleeping, they're growing

My little one is the opposite, she is sleeping nonstop and barely wants to wake to nurse.

Re: Can babies have long periods of awake/sleep? Or is this extreme?
My son was like that in the beginning. It was important for me to feel in control (although I clearly wasn't and that wasn't a big problem) so at around 12 weeks we started a "bedtime routine" The kid didn't go to sleep after the bedtime routine, but it made my day feel more structured. Being awake like that can be scary, but babies don't know what time it is, and if you have a kid who doesn't nap...well then its 10 times worse!
Good Luck!

I know everyone said they've had similar instances, but neither of my children were ever awake for that long.
From the beginning, they were down almost every 3-4 hours.

elaina hardly napped....never slept through the night either and at 6 months she still doesn't nap and still doesn't sleep through the night. She fights everything because she is just full of curiosity about everything. Everyone says it will get better.
