broad job/school related question, semi long

so I have a masters in forensic psych which at the time of my acceptance and earning my degree sounded great. Now that I'm done with the program for a year I'm finding how hard it is to get a job in this field and am stuck doing admin work at an insurance company.

I don't mind going back to school for a few months, 2 years tops but I have a complex now that I'll work hard and earn a useless degree again. I've thought about teaching/school counseling but then found out there is a hiring freeze and it's also hard to get a job with the public school system. I know the economy is crap right now so my question to you is what field is good to go into? What type of degree can I earn where I won't be wasting my time money and sanity? I don't even care if I like the field or not, I just want to do something! I know this is a pretty broad questions but any suggestions will be helpful so TIA.

Unfortunately, almost every field has been hit by the current economic crisis. School counseling has been tough for a while - not just recently. There are too many local universities graduating students with those degrees, for very few job openings.

I work in a university setting, and many of my colleagues have backgrounds in psychology and/or school counseling. We've got a hiring "frost" (most positions aren't being filled, but "essential" ones still are being posted). But if you're interested, it might be an area to check out. Jobs are often posted right on the schools' HR websites, or you can check out higheredjobs.com for a pretty comprehensive listing of positions.

With that said, if you went to school locally for undergrad and/or grad school - check with your school's career center to see if they provide services to alumni. Where I work, its free for alumni for life, other schools charge a very minimal fee (in comparison to private career counselors). They can help you job search, as well as figure out a career plan that may or may not require more schooling.

Good luck.

My MA is in Forensic Psych also. I'm assuming it's from JJC? Anyway, if it is, have you thought about transferring into the forensic counseling program? At least you can get certified and you may have more opportunities. Do you live on LI? I've found that most jobs that are related to forensic psych don't pay much and are in NJ or NYC.
