I hate the State Dept of Education
I applied for my professional certification in my Students with Dis cert. in april and just recieved a letter today stating that I am deficient 1 yr of teaching experience. this is so ridiculous because i was able to recieve my Permanent cert in my Early Childhood and elem ed certification over a yr ago and had the 3 yrs of service. so how is that i dont have it for this certification? to my calculations i have 4 yrs and 3 months. I hate them and now to try to get through to them to correct this should be loads of fun and my cert expires 8/31. im emailing them a letter and im going to fax them with the documentation to show the time i have taught and i will be now harrassing them on the phone (starting tomorrow since they decided to shut down phone service til tomorrow) grrrrrr

as far as i understand it, you need TWO years IN the certification area to get professionally certified. so you need two years as a special ed. teacher. your years working under the elem. ed. or early childhood certifications do not count towards permanent cert. in special ed.

as far as i understand it, you need TWO years IN the certification area to get professionally certified. so you need two years as a special ed. teacher. your years working under the elem. ed. or early childhood certifications do not count towards permanent cert. in special ed.
really? i dont think so because i dont technically have any years working under that license i have been working in a CTT classroom but not as a special ed teacher, and i dont think the state would know that i work in that classroom.
Also, that would be ridiculous. you can have certification and never end up using it. that would mean that I would just lose my certification just because i havent worked under it yet

i would check with the state...if you are in a CTT classroom, that may be able to double count. if ii remember correctly, it did for me. i used it for my elem. ed. license and then for 1 year of my special ed. class license (I then moved to self-contained and so used 1 year in CTT and one year in self-contained when i applied for my permanent cert.) however i was under the OLD guidelines... i went from provisional to permanent, not initial to professional.
however, i think they do ask that you have two years in the certification area to gain professional certification. how can you be certiifed in something if you never taught in it? yes, you can have the initial certification, but i think the point of the professional cert. is that you have EXPERIENCE in that certification. does that make sense?

no you only need 3 yrs it doesnt have to be in the area of certification. I finally got through to them and said they only counted my NYC time which was short 3 yrs by 2 months. they didnt count my prior time as a long term sub because they werent sure of the dates (which is crazy since it was in the system and i had sent them a letter fromt hat school when i applied for my other cert) so anyway she said she would work on it. I jsut checked TEACH and it said it was ISSUED! so yah! no more stress over this - she actually did her job!!!
