Broken Hip
DH's grandma is 86 yrs old and just fell and broke her hip.
Does anyone have any experience with someone of this age breaking their hip?
What is recovery like?
Were they able to walk again?
TIA for your help

Re: Broken Hip
My grandmother who is 89, broke her hip in January of this year and had to have a full hip replacement.. She went from being able to walk on her own to basically being confied to a wheelchair in a nursing home.. She went for physical therapy and can walk from her wheelchair to her bed with the help of someone..
Don't take this as a bad thing.. My grandmother likes to have people do things for her, so when she saw that people were at her beck and call, she decided not to work as hard bc why should she when people were always there to take care of her..
I hope your DH's grandmother feels better and is strong enough to walk on her own again..

Re: Broken Hip
YES, both my grandmother and grandfather broke hips, DH's great aunt broke hers aswell. I think it moreso depends on the person's health and mobility beforehand when speaking about recovery. All of the above walked again. There was rehab and pain but all were as good as new.
as long as there is a positive attitude and a willingness to get back to ADL and walking, she will!

Re: Broken Hip
My grandmother was about the same age as yours when she broke her hip- she had surgery and was up and walking that same day- she walks with a walker now, three years later and always has- but prior to breaking her hip, she had had major back surgery, so that probably contributed to it.
she went to rehab at north shore and they were amazing!
The doctor had told us the key with older people is to get them mobile and out of bed asap- they also send them to rehab right away which is good, too many germs that they could catch in the hospital
good luck and I hope she makes a full recovery.
