Organ Donation

Do you want to donate your organs when you die?

I would love to, especially after seeing my father get this kidney transplant. DH says that he wouldn't. He couldn't explain why, but he just isn't comfortable with it.

Re: Organ Donation

Definately! (but i'm biased too Chat Icon )... either way, i've always wanted to... i see no point having good parts buried... i dont even want to be buried in any good clothes b/c i think thats such a waste, nevermind w/ a healthy heart or liver, etc...

(though im also considering creamation- so then there really wouldnt be any reason to 'hold onto' anything)

Re: Organ Donation

I have always had an issue b/c I thought that I couldn't donate my orgains b/c Judaism did not allow organ donation. Judaism considers a dead body to be holy and forbids "desecration" of the body, such as routine autopsies. If the body is desecrated, it cannot be buried in a Jewish cemetery. This bothered me a great deal b/c I always wanted to sign the back of my licence to be able to donate my organs.

However, I just did some research and found out that the Conservative movement (I am a Conservative Jew) supports organ donation, as another main tenent of Judaism in the preservation of life. I'm actually really excited right now b/c I have discovered that I am able to do this within the boundaries of my religion! It feels weird to be excited about it, but I am! Chat Icon

Re: Organ Donation

yes, I want everything they can possibly take donated...These days its more then organs and eyes, they can use skin for skin grafts and Tissue and without a doubt I would want it to be used to help someone if possible..not like I'll be needing it..

I was wondering - how many of those that want to donate your organs are actually registered donors?

I am...

ETA- I also made sure my mom and my husband knew this as well....

My Uncle just recently died...He did not have a donor card or registered to donate his organs. The Donation people called our house at 2:30 AM to ask about donation because they are on a time frame obviously...my Mom was so upset over the 2:30 am phone call she got mad and said no....She kinda regrets it now.

Re: Organ Donation

I'm a registered donor in Virginia. As long as my organs are healthy, I want them to be able to go to someone who needs them.

Who knows when I, or someone I love, might need one. I just want to return the favor.

Yes I heard that letting others know your wishes in advance is important too.

I asked how many because I was all for donating my organs and have told family members that - however, when it came time to actually check the box - I hestitated! Chat Icon

I am too. You really don't need to though just let your family know your wishes (or have it written in your health care proxy). Even if you are a registered organ donor they can't take them w/out your next of kins permission.

Well, as I already posted, I just discovered that I can donate my organs as a Jew. So for the last few hours, I have been thinking about checking the box. I am going to but it is nervewracking. DH knows that I want to donate.
