Vent - long.

I work in NYC at a brand new school. It's my 2nd year teaching. By NO MEANS am I a super teacher or do I claim to be. I constantly ask my principal about PD and what I can do to better myself in the classroom. I love learning more and I am ALWAYS open to feedback and constructive criticism.

But there's a new teacher from one of the teaching programs who is just plain aggrivating. It's her first year, and she has one of those "Well, I give everything my all, and am here until 8 pm every night. Since you're not, you obviously don't care as much about the kids as I do" attitudes.

Unfortunately, I work with her often. She's the ESL teacher. Since I have 7 non-English speaking students I have come to her to ask for suggestions every once in a while. However, once I discovered that she was put off by my OBVIOUS frustration (how do I teach 7 arabic only speaking students circumference?!), I stopped asking for her advice. She essentially alluded to the fact that I am not doing my best with the kids...and that she has no issues with them (well, I wouldn't either if I had 7 kids in my classroom....without the other 23). She recommended that I get mentored by her TFA mentor. Uhm....?! One, the person knows nothing about math, and two, this is not MY mentor! At first I thought she was trying to be helpful, but then I realized this chick was actually criticizing my teaching techniques!!! Again, I'm not a master teacher, but I'm pretty good for my second year. I have my masters. I've taken all of the differentiating and ESL classes that you need to get your masters. I've done extensive research and worked my azzzzzzz off last year and this year. And now this chick, who has no classroom experience and no masters is going to railroad me!?

She actually cc'ed my principal on the email that suggested I get help from her TFA mentor!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so annoyed. What would you do?

(And I get that some people might think that this sounds helpful in theory...but there is some definite power playing going on here....I don't get it.)

Yea this would REALLY aggravate me too! If she wants to offer you friendly advice, that's one thing, and it should be between the TWO OF YOU! ... SOOOO NOT COOL to get the principal involved!!!! Chat Icon Honestly, I think I would bring this up to her.

It seems to me like she was trying to look good in front of the principal by doing that. I'm sure your principal has GOT TO see right through that! It just seems so transparent.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this! I can understand how frustrating it must be... This is my second year on the job too and when the year started, I introduced myself to one of the first year teachers in the building who was just starting out. She informed me on my way out of her classroom that I should come to her if I ever need help with anything. I was like.. Chat Icon .. umm.. sweetie, thanks but no. (in actuality, I just smiled and left the room)Chat Icon

Definitely bring up the fact that she cc'ed the principal. I think that's the worst part of all!! She wants to have an egotistical bug up her butt, that's one thing...... but getting the principal involved? pshhh .. lame. Chat Icon Does she have many fiends yet in the school? Seems like a desperate attempt to get recognition. Sorry, to harp on it, but it just angers me.

You know I am in my 6th yr and I find that some people are just LIKE this.

They think they are gods gift to education and know it all Chat Icon

I would AVOID her at all costs.

I would reply that you appreciate her suggestion but since the mentor is not certified in your content area you will find another solution.

It is funny how things work. One day she may need advice or assitance from you, just make sure you CC your Principal when she does Chat Icon Chat Icon
