You are suppose to keep everything for like a year. I hate clutter I throw everything out when I pay it

you're supposed to keep copies of checks for 7 years (i belive its the same for bank statements). i throw them out when i get them though   BUT 7 years is the statue of limitation i believe, so thats why they advise that you hold onto them for that long
