When is it time to give up on getting a job?

My second leave replacement. My school is likely downsizing AGAIN next year. I am hearing of so many lay offs.

I got my masters in Dec 2006 and been at it ever since. I started doubting myself as a teacher and getting really depressed.

Teachers....what are you seeing? Is it a glum outlook? Think it might be time to throw in the towel so I can start to really support my family in another field?

The time off never mattered to me until I had my daughter. Now I can't imagine any other schedule Chat Icon

Re: When is it time to give up on getting a job?

i teach in the city and i know a few principals who have already been told that there will me more cutback for the 2010=2011 school year. having said that, teachers keep having babies and retiring, so there are a few jobs out there.

if its something you really want to do you should keep at it. we are so short on staff now, that as soon as the economy turns around, they will have to hire new teachers.

best of luck!

are you on LI? elementary or secondary? in my district (northport) there are a bunch of retirements this year b/c of an incentive so you might want to look! i am a school librarian but i will say that as a mom now, the time off and hours mean a lot to me and it's the ONLY way i can be a working mom. any other profession for me would not work. i know it's a tough time but i wouldn't give up just yet! and yes, tons of girls in my district keep having babies and some don't come back. in fact, my good friend has no intention of returning in september after being out for over 2 yrs.

I am in LI too! The incentive retirement package just came out. I know how hard it is to get a good job...I spent years, even left the field with my teaching degree. i didnt give up and LOVE my district, job, and students. I went to NYC DOE and the women told me "id never find a job based on my certification, I am a dime a dozen" I went back to school for my masters in TESOL. I am happy and still thankful that i never gave up, I always wanted to teach and it was always something in me. I wish you lots of luck and hope that it works out for you. I know our contract is up and the new administration in my building are being bullies but there is always job security. Good Luck and I agree with ME75 new retirement incentives came out so there are lots of retirees in the next few years.

I agree with PP - don't give up. Hiring is cyclical, every ten years or so there are many retirements and new hires. We'll be there again in a year or two. If I were you I would look at my certification and see if there is a way to obtain another in order to make myself more marketable. SpEd, TESOL, math, science, FL are in demand areas.

Good luck!

Oh I have been in your shoes! If you are bored one day search for my posts around July-Aug of 2006! I sent so many resumes. You know how I got my job...someone of LIW posted that they had just gotten a job in NYC. I didn't even know the girl. I FMed her to see if they were still hiring, got the name of the principal ,sent my resume in, was interviewed and hired the next day!

it really depends - in elem it seems you really need to plug away at the leave replacements.

but my district has almost every secondary subject retiring.

me too. I bet we have run into each other at a WSBOCES conference. I'll have to check out Roger's emails to see if I see you.
