Has anyone ever had and enlarged ovary?
I am in so much pain. Went to my gyn last Thursday, she scheduled me for a sono yeaterday. Over this past weekend, the pain was so bad that I went to the hospital. They did a sono and I have an enlarged ovary , twice its size and a pretty good sized cyst on it too. The pain is unbearable. I went for another sono last night and the cyst actually got bigger from Saturday and the ovary is still enlarged. I have to wait for them to send the sono results to a radiologist to be read and plan on calling my doctor this morning when they open. I am so scared. The stupid receptionist at the dr office non chalantly says to me last night they will probably want to remove my ovary. I am scared to death. I am scared I will never be able to have another baby. I am in so much pain. It hurts to pee, cough, sneeze, hitting bumps in the car is awful. Has anyone ever had this and have a good outcome from it, with no surgery? Thanks!!

Re: Has anyone ever had and enlarged ovary?
I have had this several times. I have had at least 10 cysts and I have had surgery 3x for this.
The receptionist you spoke to is a moron - they will not remove your ovary. They will remove the cyst. The only way (that I know of, I am not a doctor) that you will lose an ovary is if the cyst gets REALLY big and bursts. When that happens, it will take the ovary with it. I had a cyst "the size of a small grapefruit" burst and my ovary survived, so do not get upset. And even with one ovary - you can get pregnant. It might be harder, but it is not impossible.
They will likely put you on hormones or the pill to shrink the cyst. Most of them go away on their own. It might hurt during sex for a while too until it shrinks.
If they want to operate, which they might, it is a one day thing with a scope. You will be up & around in short order. You will have some abdominal swelling. I recommedn getting the scope surgery before it bursts. If it bursts, it is VERY painful and as I said, it can damage your ovary.
I have to ask - do you have the Mirena?

Re: Has anyone ever had and enlarged ovary?
My sister went through this and after a few opinions had to get the ovary with the cyst removed entirely. However---the cyst was almost the size of a grapefruit! Yes--she put it off for a long time--she knew something was off and even felt the bulge. Her first dr. tried to scare her into surgery immediately telling her it could be cancer and she should not wait. She worked for a big medical malpractice law firm at the time and one of the partners referred her to a few specialsts. She was very lucky--she ended up with Gweneth Paltrow's GYN who did the surgery for her just using her insurance (he usually doesn't take any). Anyway, don't be scared--it will all work out!! Keep us posted!!

Re: Has anyone ever had and enlarged ovary?
Thank you!! I went back to the doctor again today. They told me there is nothing to do right now. I have to wait it out to see if it shrinks and reabsorbs. They gave me painkillers for the pain. I have to go back again next week and have another sono in a month. He told me I am to rest and on restricted activity. No heavy lifting(tell that to my 2 yr old), no sex. So this kinda sucks, the pain killers are not really taking the pain away, the edge off, but I am still in a lot of pain from the chest down. Hopefully this thing will subside soon. I am not currently on any birth control, but once this passes I will be going back on the pill to prevent them. Thank you!! Oh and when I see my regular doc next week, I plan to tell her what the receptionist said and how she shouldn't be playing doctor. I was seriously in tears sitting there last night thinking I was facing surgery.

Re: Has anyone ever had and enlarged ovary?
I have had this and simply taking the pill to regulate my hormones made the cysts go away, no surgery needed.

Well one of the opinions i got the dr said that she MIGHT have to take the ovary if it was "In bad shape"....I didn't like hearing that so I went for another opinion and turns out I didn't even need the surgery that she was pushing me for. The pill got rid of mine.
So to the OP, get a second opinion before you let ANYONE operate on you. Who wants to lose an ovary while under anesthesia, with no say so in the matter? Def get a second opinion if they want to do surgery.
