NYC teachers...can you explain that friggin salary scale?

I'm under the assumption that the 5 year longevity increase of $1000 goes away after a year, right?

Okay, so I copied and pasted the scale. I will only do the last differential as an example.

6A
62,602

6B
63,534

7A
64,918

7B
68,160

8A
71,194

8B
74,796

5 YR LONG
75,796

10 YR LONG
78,885

13 YR LONG
80,987

15 YR LONG
85,426

18 YR LONG
86,590

20 YR LONG
95,202

22 YR LONG
100,049

Note: If you are eligible for the 5 years longevity, please add $1000 to your annual salary
Example: Jane Smith has completed 5 years of full-time work for the DOE. She is currently on step
6A with the Masters Differential. Her annual salary is $56,707. Her new salary code is 6V and her new
annual salary is $57,707.

Everything makes sense until 8B. What happens after 8B?

I believe that after 8,..you do not get the salary steps every year anymore. When you get to 8,...you get the L or longevity added to your paycheck at 10, 13...etc.

Hope it helps.

So basically, for 5 years, you don't get a pay increase? Chat Icon Chat Icon

I can't say for sure because I am confused but I am at the 10 year long and I haven't gotten a raise for a couple of years (hit it in 06-07). You'd think there would be a COL increase, at least. Chat Icon Chat Icon

After 8 years your salary will remain the same. At 10 years of service you get the L10 spread throughout your salary. Then at 13 years you get another longevity pay.

So basically it stays the same for a while.

Hate to say it- but I really think we might be better just waiting out Bloomy's term (but knowing him, he'll run again Chat Icon ) because we are just going to give back more and not really get compensated for it. I'd rather stay on our current scale, and not have to give up 5 sick days, not have to stress about layoffs, etc. The climate is hostile to teachers at the moment (which I understand to a degree) and since the money is really NOT there at the moment, they will bleed it out of us.

I think I have to agree...I don't know why they want to sell teachers down the river..how did they get to where they are?! Sorry to hijack the thread, but you are correct about the sorry state of affairs...

I agree. I am perplexed about the 5 sick days thing. First of all, we work wit CHILDREN!!! They are the germiest things around. They pick their noses, sneeze and cough everywhere and you really thing they wash their hands? Chat Icon Chat Icon Secondly, how long will someone have to work before building up enough days to go out on maternity? It would take a new teacher 6 years!!! And that's IF she doesn't get sick! Chat Icon

And finally, enough with teacher hatin'!!! I'm proud of my profession and I dare ANYONE who cares to bash it to come and try it.

So back to that pay scale...what is the L10 Longevity?
