Parent Teacher Conference Q

How often do you show parents work at conferences?

Also, do you have notes of what to say or do you talk off the top of your head?

Re: Parent Teacher Conference Q

We have their portfolios out and ready for discussion if need be...we pretty much talk off of the report cards or the work in the portfolios...I do keep paper there in case parents tell me something I have to address in class (ie. kids picking on kids, etc.)

Re: Parent Teacher Conference Q

We have a form from administration that has a place for positives, negatives and goals for the child. It also has a place for parent concerns and items upon which to act. I always fill them out, so I'm prepared. I usually have their portfolio as well, but rarely get to all the work in it, there's not a lot of time.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I teach HS/MS. If I just gave an assessment or displayed work I will indicate it. Or, if there is a problem, I'll make sure to keep a sample handy. Otherwise in general I don't show work.

Also, do you have notes of what to say or do you talk off the top of your head?

I get a list in advance of who is signed up for meetings and I make sure to review and plan (not in writing) for what I have to say.

Re: Parent Teacher Conference Q

I keep my grade book out and this list on my desk:
attendance/ lateness
preparation
behavior
participation
classwork assignments
homework assignments
tests/quizzes
lab reports

It's like my cheat sheet lol. When the parent comes in, I ask them to sign in (their name, child's name, and phone number), so while they're doing that I find the kid in my grade book & then use the list above to talk about how the kid is doing in each area. I don't generally show the parent actual work, I just tell them the grades or tell them how much was completed vs. not completed.

I always aspire to have stuff out and ready- and there have been times when I have- but to be honest, I've found that the parents aren't really interested. When their kid's doing well, they're happy to get the report card and be on their way, which I do understand. When it's a particularly difficult child, I do try to have evidence (or non-evidence, like an empty portfoilio). And I use Engrade, which I love- I always have the laptop ready to pull up the info about missing work, etc.

I usually have printed sheets for each student, which show their progress in the class. It shows missing work and their current average. I also have a checklist where I make notes if they should go to extra help, need to study more, need to complete hws and labs, etc.

I teach high school so I do not really put work out.

this is what I do...before PTC I take their writing and math folders out and lay them on their desks or sometimes I pile them in order of the conferences. I like doing it on their actual desks because sometimes the parent wants to see their desk especially if it is overflowing and unorganized. I cam also access other notebooks easily as well.

Then on a post it I write a short amount of notes that I want to cover. Usually the report card speaks for itself and then they want to see work to back the grade up with.

Re: Parent Teacher Conference Q

i usually have a work sample or two, but the timegoes so fast, i usually don't have time. (I am a sp. ed. teacher, so sometimes i bring work that showcases progress or the severity of a problem). When I was a gen. ed. teacher i would assemble work samples and send them home with parents.
