If the class mother/room parent asked you to contribute $5 towards a holiday gift for your child's teacher...
...but you had already purchased something for them, would you still contribute?
I would, but it's looking like I am in the minority.
I am the room parent for my daughter's class and according to school policy, can only ask for $5 per family towards a class gift. Less than half of the class has given me money. Everyone is telling me that they already bought the teacher a little something. Which is fine...they are not obligated to participate, but it's driving me a little batty.
This is a wealthy school district. I can guarantee that many of the parents spend $5 at starbucks every single day.
It's FIVE dollars people. C'mon.

I got a letter for Emmas class on Friday, yes the 12th. I had already purchased a gift. I sent my $5 in yesterday for the class gift but I am still giving her what Emma got for her.

Yes, it would be the cost of me going without morning coffee for 2 or 3 days, not a big deal.

I would always contribute. If money was tight, I would probably contribute to the classroom gift before getting something on my own.

I am the class mom this year, and I was last year as well.
It always gets a little sticky asking the parents for $$, especially for a gift.
I have to say, EVERY parent donates, but sometimes I feel like they think they are doing ME a favor.
Personally, I ALWAYS donate to the class gift and give a gift on my own as well.

$5, yes.
This year one class asked for A LOT more than that per teacher so I passed on the class gifts. I hear a lot of people did.
And the other class waited until yesterday to ask. Tomorrow is the last day, how were we supposed to get the money to her in time? We go MWF, so we wouldnt' see them today.

If it was $5 I would however with my sons preschool I had already purchased gifts for all 3 teachers and then a letter came home asking for $21 and I had to tell the mom I couldn't because I had already bought the gifts.

Wow, it is really late to be first planning this now! We all contributed about a month ago for the class gift (everyone contributed). Some parents are also giving a little something on their own but not everyone (I am not giving anything additional but I may make cookies or something)

Re: If the class mother/room parent asked you to contribute $5 towards a holiday gift for your child's teacher...
No. Not if I already bought something. It's always "just $5" but it's $5 there and $5 there and so on. I would hope somebody does not get offended by me not contributing whether I bought something on my own or not.

Re: If the class mother/room parent asked you to contribute $5 towards a holiday gift for your child's teacher...
You can only ask for $5 but if someone wants to buy the teacher a gift or gift card for more they can, right?
I don't see any reason to kick in the $5 if you already bought a individual gift. If it was me, I would not kick in - not bc of the money - but bc I would just consider myself to be doing a separate gift so why would I contribute to the group gift? Maybe that's what's going on there
